Summary | 0013126: Dwarf miners etc no job bug
Description | Year nine of fort, 145 pop. and midway through mega-project there was a major goblin invasion. I locked down in burrows and waited for them to leave. When the left and I paused the burrow, the dwarfs in general and my miners in particular became stuck on "no job". For a while nothing got done at all and several dwarfs starved to death standing in the hospital. The problem is now partially resolved but the fixes have lead to some odd effects. What now happens is that on opening the save the miners and a random assortment of other dwarfs will dig out 3/4 squares, do one or two jobs, and then drop back into "no job" stance. If I lock and then unlock a random door anywhere in the fortress they will spring back into action for another 3/4 squares, and then give up again. They rarely mine two squares together - they will usually mine one square and then march over to the other side of the fortress to a random building project elsewhere for the next square, then back to the original room for another square, and then back to the other side, and then give up. If there is a corridor connecting two rooms, they will mine one square at one end and then walk all the way around to the other end and then back again before giving up. Sometimes they can be induced to do a little more than usual, but within ten minutes its back to no job. No smoothing or engraving is happening either. I have installed DFHack to smooth out the "general strike" issues, but it hasn't really made a difference. I've since launched two new fortresses to test settings, and both had the same "no job" problem within a season, but none of my older saves are showing the issue. I can confirm the following over three in game years of checking and testing: There are plenty of picks Miners are not doubling up jobs with wood-cutting Mining is set to only-selected. Happens whether or not miners are set to only mine or if they're allowed to take other jobs. I have deleted all burrows Burrowing miners with specific tasks instantly initiates the "no job" designation. Miners are not particularly unhappy There are no pathing issues I can find. I have a manager set with an office. There are no enemies in the fortress (except in the caverns) FPS is fine. Whether meeting areas are toggled or not has no effect. New invasions don't reverse the effect. I've tested out random stuff suggested for this bug on online forums, like designating temples, checking for flying enemies, but nothing obvious there. Asked on other forums, but no helpful advice. Happy to upload a save game once I work out how.
