Summary | 0013310: Necromancers not experimenting during world gen
Description | When generating worlds, even worlds with a large number of secrets and 350 years of history, necromancer experiments don't seem to appear anymore at all in legends mode. The experiments that do show up are always created by demons, and only very rarely if at all. This is happening even with "allow necromancer experiments" set to true.
Steps To Reproduce | Use advanced world gen. Set up the world so that it has a standard to high number of secrets. Set the end year to 350 years or later. Make sure "allow necromancer experiments" is set to true. Manually set the name of the world. Generate the world. Go into legends mode and search for the terms Demon, Eye, Hand, Fist, Soldier, or Warrior which should reveal any humanoid experiments. If there are any, see if they are made by a necromancer or just a demon. Fail to find any. Repeat this process until it clicks that something might be wrong here.
Additional Information | I can't tell if the necromancers are actually never creating experiments, or if the experiments and the act of creating them are simply not showing up in Legends Mode. Either way, the problem persists if I start a fort mode game, and try to use the DF hack sandbox to spawn in creatures. If Legends Mode didn't reveal any necromancer experiments, you won't be able to find them in the spawn menu either. I haven't tried to bait a tower into attacking one of my forts yet to see if experiments will spontaneously come into being for a counter-attack, but that's next on my to-do list. I spent so many play sessions trying to create a world that has necromancer experiments, including all day today, and no luck.

@Zuisudra I'd agree. I discovered this issue when I was trying to set up a fort with the intention of trying to attract necromancer experiment visitors that could reproduce, with the goal of "creating" a population of necromancer experiments in fort mode without needing to create and retire adventurers repeatedly (and adventurers don't reproduce). In the early stages of the challenge (when adventure mode was newer in the steam version) it sometimes took a few attempts to generate a world that had playable necromancer experiments, and I was using that as a bench-mark for whether or not it would be possible to attract experiment visitors or experiment migrants. More recently, starting a few months ago but not sure which version, I started striking-out, generating world after world, checking adventure mode, and not finding playable experiments. Eventually I gave up on that first plan and decided I would use DF hack to give myself a starter population of necromancer experiments, and that's where I discovered that this was probably a bug. I was rejoiced to learn that you could now search legends mode with species name, so that meant it would be possible for me to use legends mode to check if there were necromancer experiments in the world with genders that I could use as my experiments. I distinctly remember seeing necromancer experiments, and the creation of experiments by necromancers, in legends mode in the earlier attempts too because I used that info to track down where the settlements of "playable" necromancer experiments were in the world, find the settlement in adventure mode, and create a fort near there to see if it helped attract them as visitors (or even annex them or something). That's when I discovered that after spending all day generating worlds, I couldn't find a single one where an experiment created by a necromancer appeared in legends mode, nor could I find any account of a necromancer creating any experiments. I was able to VERY RARELY find an experiment created by a demon, usually no more than 3 or 4 individual experiments in those cases, and they were always either "night's hand" or "night's fist", and never had gendered experiments. So this is where I think this may be a bug. Either necromancers aren't creating experiments during world gen anymore, or those experiments are not appearing in legends mode (nor is the account of them creating those experiments appearing in legends mode). If I were yall, here's where I'd look: -Is there something wrong with the "allow necromancer experiments" setting? I always gen with this set to true, but it could be getting ignored. -Did the necromancer experiments become hidden in the same update as making legends mode searchable by species? I generally don't see procedurally generated angels in legends mode either (though they might just have zero historical figures), but the same types of keywords that would cause a humanoid experiment to pop up would also reveal proc gen angels. The proc gen angels appear when I'm spawning creatures in DF hack, but not any experiments. (the words "demon, eye, hand, fist, soldier, or warrior". -Perhaps experiments are being made, but it is no longer considered a historical event? So for example, the creation itself isn't showing up on the necromancer's history, and the victim isn't a historical figure, just by virtue of being experimented on anymore? Perhaps the experiments ARE in the world, but aren't appearing in legends mode. Perhaps the DF hack sandbox is relying on things that appear in world gen data, and thus the experiments aren't showing up as on option there? -Perhaps also the playable humanoid experiments are dependent on legends mode data as well, so if experimentation is happening but isn't recorded as legends data, and not creating any historical figures that are experiments, then there is no chance for them to appear as playable (since there is no account of any historical experiments living in a playable civ?) I recently started a fort as a test to see if I can irritate a necromancer tower into seiging me, with the goal of seeing if they will bring experiments. This is a world with a pretty long history, high secret count, and no necromancer experiments in legends mode (and no option to spawn any experiments via df hack sandbox), so IF experiments exist but aren't showing up in legends mode anymore, I might see some in the coming days. |
