Summary | 0001370: Farm built on muddy chalk/bauxite/rubies, after mud dried it was all chalk
Description | A dry underground room was irrigated and the resulting muddy cavern floor was composed of chalk, bauxite and star ruby. A farm was built in it. After several years, the cavern floor was no longer muddied and the floor tiles previously made of bauxite and star ruby changed to chalk, which was presumably the "default rock type" of that z-level.
Steps To Reproduce | Irrigate an underground room for farming and wait 5 years at least. The floor must be composed of different types of rock or gems.
Additional Information | Artificially muddied cavern floor becoming dry could be intended and not be a bug. The floor changing rock type when this takes place is certainly a bug. The floor was smoothed by engravers at some point, I'm unsure if this plays a role at all.

Ok the change in rock type is a bug. The unmuddying of the stone, especially the smooth stone, isn't a bug. Did this only occur after you removed a farm? |
The change in rock type is an old bug, it was in 40D. Not sure how far back it goes. |
^^^ Do you know of any reports from 40d that we could refer to? It may be related to this old one: # 000719 □ [dwarf mode][buildings] (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=8714.0) building a farm on soil that was collapsed into a rock layer replaces the soil with rock |
I'm referring to when you build a construction (a floor or wall for example) on say, bauxite, it reverts to the layer stone when you remove said floor or wall. The OP didn't say that he collapsed any soil, so I'm not sure if the one you linked to is actually related, apart from the farm. |
This happens with farm plots, paved roads, and constructions. Oddly, with farm plots this can (and will) happen before the farm plot is even built - you can actually use suspended farm plots outdoors to remove grass and shrubs in order to prevent the spread of wildfire. |
Happens all the time. Special clusters in a rock, like gems, ore, or MICROCLINE will be destroyed and reverted to the base type of rock by constructing walls/floors or by building a paved road. Then remove it once it has been constructed. You'll see the regular granite, diorite, or whatever the base stone type of the level is. |
This bug appears to be a moot point nowadays, since mining works like this nowadays. Probably can be closed. |
Realism wise it generally makes sense for mining to take away everything but the layer stone and gameplay wise it provides a cost to digging out a square instead of just converting it to a floor and also giving a chance of a drop. It's unintuitive that constructing stuff reverts the floor to the layer stone, realism wise it doesn't make any sense and gameplay wise there is no need to provide a cost for putting stuff on a floor. Mining and constructing aren't really comparable here. |
What I'm saying is that the bug here no longer exists, because the circumstances of its existence can not happen anymore. |
Good point. |
