Summary0001375: Using Channels/Ramps to create shafts for fortress's seems to cause pathfinding problems.
DescriptionThis has happened 4 different times, twice on two different maps, ending in abandonment/reclaim of the forts.

I can't really explain this without saying what happened before, so I'll get that out of the way.

Recently, I had just embarked on a promising region, nothing seemed very special about it, as far as I know no HFS etc.. Upon mining out a good position into a hill, I proceeded to have my two miners dig channels deep into the ground (Note: Not stairs, channels. Channels may be the cause of this, but I have yet to verify.) So after having dwarves dig fairly deep, a good 4 Z-Levels with an alternating ramp/channel configuration, I had my two miners begin mining out my main hall. The dwarves mined out a good portion of it, but I began noticing them getting hungry/thirsty, so I un-designated the rest of it so they could rest. They didn't. They just sat where they were, not doing anything, walking around a couple tiles, but nothing else. Soon enough they became starving, dehydrated, and I tryed to get them out using various methods. (Burrows, building and placing a door, trying to have them create stairs upwards) but none worked, and when told to dig out the stairs, they didn't go to mine them out. Eventually I just abandoned before they died completely.

Another thing is that my other dwarves, who were on the surface, did not go down into the main hall, or into the shaft I had the miners create, to haul out stones. They would at least do jobs, but would go no-where near the shaft or beyond as if it was cursed. Sorry for the wall of text, but I'm not really good at reporting issues, so yeah. I've searched but found nothing pertaining to the issue, except the generic path finding bugs, but they did not seem relevant.
Steps To ReproduceI have not tested this myself, but if you were to simply dig a shaft into the ground several z-levels, using the channels/ramps instead of stairs, I think it would occur. However, I do have a save of the fort on which the problem arose.

Here is a link. If you abandon the fort, and reclaim to check it, reclaim the fortress that is not on a small volcanic island.

Additional InformationThe DFort I was using had one modification to the soils/rocks inorganic.txts, I removed all aquifers as I find them annoying as shit. That is the only external tinkering that has been done with the Raws at all.

I've removed the aquifer tags from the inorganic.txts, it causes no problems and I've done this in 40D as I also find them annoying.

You could think of the UG pools, lakes, etc as aquifers.

Anyways, enough derailment, sounds like you got your miners stuck without any way out.

Yes, it means they end up stuck in the hole they've dug. This is expected behavior, and from looking at your save, it's exactly what happened to your miners. Your ramps don't go anywhere. The wiki has a good article on using ramps: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Ramp#Using_Ramps

Another point of confusion may be that channeling is now a "create ramps from above" designation.

I got your miners out of the pit easily by changing the designations for upward stairways to up/down stairways. They carved them, and were then able to exit the pit.

Does that clear things up?
