Summary0001485: Toggle to allow (empty) barrels in furniture stockpile doesn't work
DescriptionBuilt a custom stockpile next to kitchen to hold empty barrels, but all the barrels are delivered to a general furniture stockpile. Tried again with another fort, where I built a custom stockpile next to the fishery, but it remained empty.

I don't think a refuse stockpile for barrels will get you anywhere. Try excluding barrels from the general furniture stockpile, and then placing a second furniture stockpile that only accepts barrels.

Does that clear things up?

this should be marked resolved. items have to be damaged to go on the refuse stockpile and that is very rare

Yeah, I'm just waiting for a reply from AngleWyrm.

Oh, THAT'S how they get there. I was wondering.

[Sorry about the refuse confusion, thanks for clearing it up]

Steps to reproduce:
1). Start new game, create carpenter shop and job up 30 barrels
2). Create two FURNITURE stockpiles
3). Go to Q->S settings in one, and disable barrels
4). Go to settings in the other, disable all, then activate only barrels

The barrels pile up in the carpenter's shop, untouched by the dwarves.

5). Create a third FURNITURE stockpile, with no settings adjustments.

Dwarves move barrels from carpenter's shop to the new stockpile.

This is not a bug. You likely disabled all of the quality settings, which prevents ANYTHING from being put in the stockpile.

Try it and see for yourself.

I just did. I made a barrel-only stockpile (by leaving only barrels enabled under "type", but leaving the rest enabled) and deleted my old general furniture stockpile, and dwarves quickly moved all the barrels into the new barrel-only stockpile.

Like I said, if you forbid everything from core quality or total quality (or everything from both material and metals), then no furniture can be taken to that stockpile. You should forbid "type" and re-enable barrels instead of using "block all" and re-enabling barrels.

I use "block all" then unforbid "type" seeds, for food piles near a plantation and that works fine. I also use "block all" and then permit "drink (plant)" for booze storage, and that also works.

Yes, but for wood/cloth/stone/metal stuff you should also enable 'material' and both qualities to make it work.

I second RusAnon's solution, though replace 'should' with 'must.'

I've never had a problem in any 0.31.xx version getting empty barrels into their own stockpile.

As far as I can remember, it has always been this way.

Yes, this is a common mistake (I've made it myself on occasion). However, it's not a bug. To enable a custom stockpile to accept only one kind of furniture item you should only forbid the type list. Forbidding quality modifiers or material type (eg. basic quality wooden barrels) means you get nothing in the stockpile. Oh, and don't forget to disable sandbags too, or they'll get mixed in there.

Recommend marking this as resolved.

Perhaps the confusion is in the stockpile designation info? If you hit q and move to the stockpile, you can set the MAX number of barrels (and likewise bins), but not the minimum. So, even if you leave the MAX number at the MAX number, it still doesn't mean that the dwarfs will put barrels there. A MIN number would be nice, but alas...

@kwieland - the number of max barrels/bins is only useful for stockpiles used to store things that can be contained in barrels/bins. The OP is talking about a furniture stockpile designated to contain empty barrels. However, he has disallowed all materials and qualities of barrel (most likely), so no barrels can be stored there.

@Telarin. Yes, I understand.

A related asside: I have seen this sort of bug with bags, though. Ideally I want a stockpile for coffers and one for bags. Right? Coffers are for rooms, bags are for the food/glass industry. However, I have yet to find a way to do it. If I take a furniture stockpile and only forbid material "stone", it should not allow coffers but should allow cloth/leather/etc bags, right? However, you will not get any cloth bags. I think this bug is reported elsewhere, though, but I couldn't find it.

Reminder sent to: AngleWyrm

AngleWyrm, does RusAnon's recommendation of re-enabling the Material/Quality sections fix your problem?

Yes, thanks RusAnon. I created a Furniture stockpile, went to settings, and ONLY forbid Type, (leaving the materials and quality settings enabled) then re-enabled 'barrels' in Type, and the dwarves moved barrels to that stockpile.

Yea, sometimes you have to juggle the settings around.
