Summary0001570: Buckets quantum stockpile in hostpital from repeat suturing - become unusable
DescriptionMay be related to 0000168 (recent fix may have fixed this bug too)
After years of being constantly "sutured" for the gash in his left-cheek, I noticed there was something like twenty buckets on the same tile as my injured dwarf. No doubt from being given water (or from cleaning?).
This started happening with other dwarves too (who also were being repeat-surgery/suturing/etc)

I tried caving in the ceiling next to the patients to try to fix the repeat suturing with no success. I then caved in the ceiling ON TOP of the dwarves, killing them instantly. There are now no dwarves in the hospital, but nobody will reclaim or use the buckets. I tried forbidding/unforbidding, dumping/undumping. It let my dwarves move all the buckets to a garbage dump and then I tried reclaiming them. Its like they don't exist, my dwarves wont move them out of the dump.
I do have empty bucket stockpiles. I was able to move a bunch of other buckets from one stockpile to another.

My hospital zone has 7/4 of its reserved buckets. It does not have 20+.

This is a silly bug. But it has stolen my buckets from me!

link to 0000168 (repeat suturing bug): http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=168

I tried un-designating the zone, and my dwarves still ignore the buckets, although they take all the stuff out of the hospital zone (including the reserved buckets stored in coffers!)

I'm not sure this is related to
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=191
because the buckets don't seem to be reserved by the zone.

Maybe it is related to:
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=414
In that it keeps trying to use buckets OUTSIDE of the designated hospital zone

Do the buckets have anything in them?

Oh I thought I had looked.
Yes! They all have stagnant water coated with a random mixture of clay/loam/siltstone

In one game, I had a bunch of buckets get stuck with water in them and the dwarves wouldn't empty them, making them unuseable.

Hmm... there's a possibility it's related to 0001236, but that involved buckets with lye AND water, so I dunno.

Are there a whole bunch of "Clean Patient" jobs queued up in the [j]obs screen? Or a bunch of other jobs that could be trying to use the buckets?

If there's a large number of inaccessible items that are dump-designated or could be stored in a stockpile, it's possible that 0001173 is keeping the buckets from being hauled.

In any case, you should probably upload a save for this one. http://dffd.wimbli.com

Hmm. Sorry I didn't get a save sooner.
I just went back and checked, and the buckets are GONE! My dwarves must have reclaimed them finally, maybe found a use for the water?
My fortress has been running for quite some time after I got this bug, so can't be sure.
Oh... I did designate some spots to be filled as ponds, maybe thats where they went? The garbage dump that I used to move the barrels now has a bunch of other dumped rock in it instead.

Yeah, I suspect that stockpiles are pickier than "Fill Pond" about whether the buckets are allowed to already contain water.

The buckets are stuck because they are filled with "water laced with mud [8/9/10..]" (listed in z-stocks as liquids) So they are not stored or moved. If you dump the buckets, the 'water laced with mud' will be forbidden so of course again the bucket is not moved even if you unforbid the bucket.

However dumping only the water from the buckets, using the z-stocks screen doesn't seem to work either.

There was a workaround in 40d, but i can't recall/figure it out.

This may also be related to fill pond jobs that do not disappear despite the pond being undesignated.

That sounds plausible if contaminated buckets are being treated like containers. Stockpiles won't take a container unless every single thing in the container is permitted in the stockpile, so maybe contaminants are being figured as contents of the bucket and since contaminants aren't on the list of permitted materials in any stockpile, they're getting left where they are.

This should all be verified a bit better though.

Success. I was able to remove the water from the buckets by putting the buckets outside (in freezing weather), then dumping the ice inside. This workaround won't work for everyone, though, as it needs freezing weather.

I've had buckets filled with perfectly fresh water lying all around my fortress, mainly due to 0002448, and I've been emptying them by restricting my dwarves to the indoor burrow, locking off the wells, and designating a Pond zone to be filled - they pick up the buckets and dump them into the pond, eventually emptying them all out (and then spamming job cancellations because they have no water source).
