Summary | 0001573: Underground trees leave behind soil floors when cut down
Description | When you cut down the trees found underground, they leave behind a floor of the type of soil found on the surface, rather than the type of rock the cavern is made of. The floor's muddiness and the pile of mud remain, though.

I think it's this old one: # 000657 □ [dwarf mode][jobs][designations] (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=8510.0, http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=6870.0) harvesting vegetation can make sand turn into stone, and cutting down trees can turn stone into sand |
|
vegetation can turn sand into stone? Never noticed that one, but I never really do above ground planting either so I never harvest shrubs. As for turning stone into sand, I always thought this was somewhat realistic. After trees take root somewhere they tend to turn the rock into soil. Maybe not this fast, but it does happen. I figured this was a feature. |
|
Nah, it's a longstanding bug. I would like to note that sand/soil can also be generated at season changes and saves/loads on obsidian caps (solidified vent openings), especially those created by the player. I haven't confirmed this for the new version, but I see no earthly reason to think it's changed. Seeing your smoothed/engraved obsidian floors on the first level of your obsidian tower turn into sand is rather a serious affair. |

Tried testing this in 0.34.11 and found fire clay cavern floor underneath a fungiwood tree and in several other high traffic locations in the first cavern. Multi-tile trees in v0.40.x may no longer display this behaviour, though it could also be related to how soil layers are generated. |
|
Tested in 0.40.09 Ground directly underneath Tree Trunk in first cavern layer was Fire Clay. Pastured Grazers also reveal Fire Clay when they eat the cavern plants. Both areas turned to appropriate stone type when down stairs where carved in them. Shrubs gathered left only the bare rock behind which seems like a bug as no plant life will grow there. Perhaps this should be closed, but plant life seems very buggy in the way it interacts with soil layers. |

Using DF 0.40.23, no mods. 1. 0004492 does not occur if the caverns have not been breached, simply because there is no plant growth. Muddying underground floors can't be used to make soil if there is no moss / underground shrubs / underground trees. I have done a number of tests to confirm this (details on request). 2. 0004492 is marked as a duplicate of this, but the comments here, and there, confused me. The comments in this report (1573) read like 'not a bug', IMO. 3. I have a number of tests. Summary: 0004492 still applies. Detailed results: * Underground plants (e.g. cave moss) will grow on underground natural stone floor when muddy. * Mud can be removed by building furniture (e.g. bed). * Underground plants (e.g. cave moss) are _not_ removed by building furniture. * Underground plants (e.g. cave moss) can grow in depth 1 water. * Constructing (e.g. floors) on underground plants (e.g. cave moss) will remove the plants. Further, deconstructing that construction will reveal a soil type floor (e.g. black sand). For convenience I will be uploading a save file from just before water is applied in a fortress where the first cavern layer has just been found. Save file: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10384 |
