| Description | Upon starting freshly download game and starting Dwarf Fortress executable, I am met with the following message: FATAL ERROR Main index file missing/corrupted. The file "index" must be in the "data folder. Make sure DF decompressed into its folders properly. The index file is in the proper folder however. | ||||

Fixed the problem by installing in a folder other then program files (vista) |

Yes, since Vista (and Seven as well) doesn't like things being done in Program Files without administrator access, this can cause somewhat major issues with Dwarf Fortress, but as you've noted, installing it (almost) anywhere else will resolve the issue. |
