Summary0002673: Entire sections of the ocean freezing over in winter
DescriptionOn embark in the last 2-3 fortresses I've made, I've been in temperate climates with a coastal fortress. I've noticed the ocean being frozen over completely, until about 11-13 days later when it thawed.
Steps To Reproduce1 - select a coastal embark with cold or temperate weather.
2 - Embark, and look at the ocean. Is it frozen?
Additional InformationProbably a bug, as I can't remember it happening in versions prior.

A few notes.

1. I can imagine the recent temperature changes may have caused issues, but I think this might be expected behaviour.
2. Is the ocean temperate as well as the land? The two biomes, even though they are right next to each, can have different temperatures.
3. Even temperate biomes can have brief freezing periods. Typically about 2 in-game weeks, I believe.
4. The ocean can freeze (Icebreakers and all) and the game currently doesn't give salt-water any different properties than fresh-water (so the freezing temps are the same).
5. Freezing/melting behaviour leaves a lot to be desired but that's a suggestion and not a bug.

So as it stands I think you just have a fortress with a temperate but freezing biome that is resulting in a frozen ocean for a short period of time. A cold biome ocean is probably going to freeze for longer.

I didn't think that oceans were supposed to freeze over. Never used to.

Why oceans are not supposed to freeze over? For example our Nort Pole is on frozen ocean (image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Noaa3-2006-0602-1206.jpg )

"probably a bug, as I can't remember it happening in versions prior." is ridiculous, according to this logic any new feature is a bug.

In cold areas of ocean ice is formed overnight, which melts early in the morning.

To reproduce find an area of ice at night that is near the border between ocean ice / ocean water. Walk (or crawl) around until dawn arrives. The game will freeze for several minutes (around seven minutes for me).

I think the 'bug' aspect is the suddenness with which it changes, although this is similar to the 'snap freezing' of rivers and ponds that often claims the lives of careless adventurers.

Oceans can freeze in real life. You can cross from alaska to Russia or the other way around during winter. This probably isn't a bug...
