Summary0002698: Caged animals player gains through merchant death cannot be freed
DescriptionPlayer can assign and free his own animals to cages, freeing them at will. But animals one gains through merchant death cannot be freed through normal "unassign caged animal". Dwarves will always grab a free cage to transfer them to, and will cancel "unassign" (normally, freeing) one of these dead merchant owned caged creatures.
Steps To Reproduce1. Merchants bring caged animals.
2. Merchant gets killed in ambush.
3. Build dead merchant owned caged creature somewhere as a free standing cage.
4. "Unassign" creature
5. Watch dwarf run to get free cage, put unassigned animal into this cage, possibly return the caged animal in its new cage to animal stockpile if room in stockpile.

Note: player can assign and free his own animals to cages, freeing them at will. But animals one gains through merchant death cannot be freed through normal "unassign caged animal".

Hrm, I wonder what happens if said animals are in a metal cage and you set that cage for melting and it gets melted and the animal freed?

Melt the cage? Probably cancels the melt order if there are no free cages. When there isn't a free cage to transfer the animal to, the process to cage or free cancels. I "built" all my free cages and then unassigned a merchant inherited animal out of its cage to see what happens. What happens is the procress cancels, and complains there are no free cages to move the animal to. I expect meling a metal cage under similar circumstanes would do the same thing.

What happens if you link a lever to the cages and try releasing them that way?

I don't know. It didn't occur to me to try that until after I had sold traded those animals to some merchants as they were useless to me. Next time I get a dead merchant animal, I'll try installing their cages and linking them to a lever and see what happens.
