How large an area are you embarking on? The default is 4x4.

What are your PC specs?

Are you using 31.12 Legacy or 31.12 SDL? If you're using SDL, make sure to update your graphics drivers.

shamelessly taken from DxDiag, so I have no idea if that's everything you need.

I don't think I'm using Legacy or SDL, because I've never seen that mentioned anywhere on my PC

I hope this is all you need.

Also, I've managed to start one fort that is running just fine, so my initial report apparently isn't entirely correct, the bug doesn't always appear.

Invisible stealthy units on the map lower your fps by a very large amount. Could there be a large group of them around?

Legacy/SDL is not something related to your PC, it's the version of Dwarf Fortress you downloaded. We need to know that ASAP.

Specifically, "df_31_12_win.zip" is SDL and "df_31_12_legacy.zip" is Legacy.

If you're using the SDL version, also post your PRINT_MODE setting from data/init/init.txt.

in that case I have the SDL version, and as requested:

[PRINT_MODE:STANDARD]
    Mode examples:
     PRINT_MODE:2D
     PRINT_MODE:TEXT
     PRINT_MODE:FRAME_BUFFER
     PRINT_MODE:PARTIAL:0
[SINGLE_BUFFER:NO]

Also, I think the bug is now definitely gone, I installed a graphics-pack (Ironhand's, to be specific) and from what I can tell it's just disappeared after that.

I've embarked on about 5 worlds now, and all of them ran at 90fps, for as long as they lasted.

Alright, glad to hear that for you this is fixed. Reopen if it appears again.
