DescriptionI'm using the latest .12 dwarf fortress in fortress mode, running year 10. Small version with no music.

My 20 miners all seem to stand around doing nothing but item carrying, in fact, make that EVERYONE else too, -- everyone seems to be now doing nothing but mostly "Store Item in Stockpile" Eat, Sleep, Drink, Store Owned Item or Pickup Equipment, a couple is "Construct Building." but they were never in the military, as they're legendary.. hmm.

This, despite there being tons of picks and lots of accessible places to dig. They shoot at goblins just fine as archers, but when they should pick up the picks again, they do nothing. Squads have been variously active/training and not. I think the task manager is now seriously broken with the military squad system now.

A "careful" analysis reveals, that any dwarf that has now been active in the military is NOT touching their main jobs at all. Miners aren't mining nor is anyone else doing anything, only dwarves doing their real jobs are those that have never ever been in the military at all. -- How do I fix this?

Patients in the hospital have started to die due to thirst, as nobody is serving them water anymore, food is beginning to run low, though we have big caches. Apparently nobody is making booze or cooking anymore either. Almost all dwarves only seem to move item stuff around and not do any of their primary jobs, yet most but a coulpe seem to have their job preferences intact.

I had most dwarves serve in military, then active/training and now inactive. If I put them inactive, they do nothing as in all go "No Job". If I put the squad to active/traning, dwarves start doing stone carrying and stuff, but not mining nor their real jobs.

I think this is breaking down my fortress and will starve everyone eventually. The food is starting to run out because nobody farms or harvests anymore and nobody does their primary job anymore, only carrying stuff, but not giving water to the injured. Only dwarves working as supposed to seem to be those who never were in military.

This is fortress year 10, so I've been playing a while now. Just had the king arrive.

Also I dunno if this is a bug, but there is no slade/zombie fortress in my map at all. I picked the smallest possible starting area.
Steps To ReproduceI think, though could use more testing:
Put working dwarves into military, set civilian alert to active/training and alert back to inactive -> nobody who was in squad works anymore.
Put civilian alert back to active/training, put squad to inactive A. -> Dwarves work trivial item carrying jobs, but not their primary ones.


Additional InformationI just got a bunch of dwarves that had lost all their job details and they weren't gone because they were dissed from the military. I dunno how or why they became that way, but now there's been like 10-20 of them and I've got 178
dwarves, only couple have been kicked out from military earlier.

This sounds like the same bug, but that bug was fixed in version .11, which you aren't apparently playing.

What version did you generate your fort in?

And also, that last thing in your description isn't a bug necessarily.

Just want to check, are you dismissing your dwarves completely from your military cause inactive military dwarves Don't do civi jobs, they do self training and self maintinence. By your description this isnt whats happeneing but I want to double check. If you had you whole fortress in inactive military duty that could explain this problem.

Sounds like to me that you have a lot of "other" jobs. Unless they are simply taking their military equipment back and forth to the bins to store it.

My suggestion would be to not make anything new, stop farming (as long as you have food/drink) and let your dwarfs clean out all the haul items jobs. Then see if they "quit working". I find that after a goblin raid it can take months to clean up all the haul jobs using just 20 dwarfs. Think about it. Each goblin has 12+ items! 12 haul jobs right there!

As for the patients not getting water, take a dwarf and disable all the jobs except "feed patients".

Have you tried disbanding the squads (instead of going inactive?)

By default I forbid all death items, both own and foreign due to civilians running into battlefields. So this is not due to such jobs.

This was news to me! - I was under the impression they did work before, but it appears I was mistaken.

I will double check this problem now to see if I can get them back to work by kicking all skilled dwarves out of the military. Anyway, they certainly carry stuff around. -- It would suck if I need to dismiss everyone from the military just to get them to work in peace time... Also, the king seems to work nicely
at jobs and in the military in this version. -- I sure hope he doesn't ask for slade items as I lack the slade fortress...

I generated my fortress with early 2010 version and started playing then, I think. I've been following updates regularly, except skipped .11.

I was told by other sources this has been fixed before, so I guess it's just that I didn't understand the new military system as well as I should have.
Maybe I was just too eager to recruit everyone for archery training now that they actually train and shoot at stuff. BTW: crossbowmen seem awfully inefficient nowadays compared to the pre-2010 game where they were real rambo-style butchers. I've had 20 marksdwarves shoot at a big bunch of goblins in a closed arena but not do much damage at all to them. At this rate it will take a season or two until they're all dead.


Anyway, thanks for the help. I think this should solve my problem.

Marksdwarves, as with any soldiers, are very dependent on materials now. From what I've read, you basically need steel to penetrate the iron armor of goblins. Wood/copper/silver bolts are liable to be stopped short even by clothing.

I'm hoping that this won't stay the same - that piercing attacks will gain a tendency to punch through nonrigid armor and clothing - but for now, you need good bolts if you want to do much with them.

Alright, reopen this if removing them from the military entirely doesn't resolve your problem. It sounds like you've got it figured out, though.

(That is, make sure they aren't considered inactive military dwarves)
