Summary | 0003507: Pet Cat Eats Pet Roach, Mayhem Does Not Ensue.
Description | Soon after immigrating to Ostathkel, as she walked into the main entrance hall for the first time, Cerol Naniradil spotted a lovely roach sitting lonely in a saguraro rib cage, ignored by everyone... of course she adopted it on the spot! She was carrying it along in her pocket in the dining room after saying hello to everyone, and she was just on her way to start work — except it turned out that the fortress had run out of rough picture japsers, which was a pity — when it must have crawled up onto her lapel or something, because there was a POUNCE, and this ENORMOUS skinny cat with light brown hard bounced off Cerol's chest, running away with the roach in its mouth! It was Rith Etasalåth, the pet cat of Rakust Berkadôl, and as it fled, Cerol could see that her roach was already crunched, legs waving feebly in death, so she gave up the chase. PROBLEMS: 1. If pets are not supposed to eat other pets, then this is a thing that is not working for verminous pets. 2. Cerol was not unhappy because her pet had died (right in front of her, too), despite having happy thoughts about (a) adopting and (b) seeing her pet. 3. Cerol was not angry at either Rith (the cat) or Rakust (the owner). As this seems like a marvellous opportunity for people to get off on the wrong foot, missing it is definitely a bug. (What OUGHT to happen, is, an enraged Cerol Naniradil makes an attempt to chase and kill Rith Etasalåth for several turns before cooling down, possibly resulting in a fistfight with Rakust Berkadôl, the involvement of the sheriff, and two caged dwarves.) 4. NO RECORD OF THE PET ROACH'S NAME EXISTS. The pet roach is not mentioned in the game log, and does not appear on the list of units as deceased. The roach remains (currently travelling northeast in the mouth of a cat) do not bear the name of either the roach or the owner. For some reason this bugs me.

Pet vermin are sort of odd, since they never exist as units - they only show up as items, and once they're dead you can no longer determine what they were named. This is probably partially related to 0001187 - back in 40d, the vermin would always be in the dwarf's inventory and would never be vulnerable to being killed by a cat. |

Had something similar happen with a blue jay, only it was flitting about the owners room when the cat opened the door and pounced it. |
