Summary0000368: Smooth Stone designation removes stairways
DescriptionDesignating, but not digging out downward stairways, I mass designated the area to be smoothed by my engravers. The engravers get to work slowly, and the miners quickly dig out the stairways I came back later, and found the staircases gone, one at a time as a the engravers moved across the room
Steps To Reproduce1. Designate a square to have a staircase dug out.

2. Designate the same square to be smoothed over.

2 1/2. The staircase must not yet be dug when you designate the smooth order, and the miner must get to the square before the engraver

3. Wait.

Additional InformationWhile this may actually be what is supposed to happen when you order staircases to be smoothed, I myself don't know, it still doesn't make a lot of sense.

Is the staircase still actually there and just not visible? I mean, are the dwarves still able to use it even though it looks like it's not there? When you smooth a wall or floor, the graphic for it changes. Maybe staircases just don't have a 'smooth' graphic, since they aren't supposed to be smoothed, so it defaults to looking like a normal floor tile, while the staircase is still physically there.

Also, try as I might, I could not reproduce this by following your instructions. Maybe there was something else involved that caused this behavior.

I still can get this to happen consistently. You can not have the staircase already dug when you designate the smoothing, you must designate the downward staircase, designate the smoothing, and have the miner dig out the stairway before the engraver comes to smooth over the floor.

Yes, the staircase is actually gone, and you have to dig out a new one.

Overseer in 0004822 had this problem as well.

I have never seen this problem in 0.34.11 onward, have many times dug out stairways and then smooth-designated the area they were in. Was this fixed in the transition from 0.31.xx to 0.34.xx?

Please reopen this report or PM a manager on the forums if this problem is still present in 0.40.08+.
