Summary | 0004156: STANDARD print mode does not display anything
Description | I noticed that STANDARD wouldn't display a PNG font in .20 (maybe .19 too), but now I can't use STANDARD at all, even with the default settings and font set to BMP. I can work around this, of course, by using 2D, but I'd really like to be able to get the extra speed too, since I don't exactly run a super-computer.
Steps To Reproduce | Set print mode to STANDARD, start game.

Reminder sent to: Rochndil Are you using 31.21 Legacy or 31.21 SDL? Does this occur in a completely vanilla download of 31.21, or have you customized any settings at all (you mentioned "font set to BMP")? Have you tried updating your graphics drivers? |
31.21 SDL. Re-downloaded the file, opened into a new directory, and changed ONLY the print mode to STANDARD. Program opens with NO image, just an empty window with the sounds playing. AFTER having the program fail to run, I tried to set the display font to the BMP version, which worked in .19, but that also failed. I also downloaded the Legacy version, but it lacks the STANDARD print setting, at least from what I can see. The craptastic ATI drivers for my built-in video here are up to date. I'll test on my home PC this evening (XP SP3, nVidia video). |
So PRINT_MODE:2D still works? I mean, the whole point of different PRINT_MODES is that they don't all work for everyone, so this probably isn't a bug. |
Yes, 2D still works, but STANDARD worked as of .19, and mostly in .20 (no PNG support). I'll re-test all the permutations this evening on my home PC. |
I've just tried the same thing (extract 0.31.21 SDL, change PRINT_MODE to STANDARD) with nVidia video and it works fine. |
Good evening. Just confirmed Quietust's test results. On my home PC (XP-SP3), with an nVidia card, the STANDARD print method works just fine. I've grabbed the last 4 version from my archive, and will re-test the older versions on my Win7-64 machine (ATI built-in video). |
Back on the Win7-64 PC, and testing with the last four versions (21-18) of the SDL code. All four versions fail to display with STANDARD when using a PNG font. Testing with a BMP font instead, the results were the same - always fails. I was sure that at least one earlier experience had the BMP working with STANDARD, but testing cannot duplicate the scenario. I agree that a given video mode not working with a given card is not a bug. What I initially saw (perhaps I mis-read what was going on) was a difference in behavior between one code release and another, which I WOULD consider to be a bug. For now, I'd file this as a non-bug error report. ATI Radeon Express 1150 (built into an HP box) is NOT compatible with STANDARD print method under recent builds of the SDL code line (tested specifically with .18-.21). |

Alright, thanks for the followup! |
