Summary | 0004297: Making requests results in a caravan carrying almost nothing
Description | I'm not sure this is a bug, but I once had a dwarven caravan that was absolutely pathetic. The first time the caravan came, I requested steel, pig iron, 2 kinds of flux stone, cows, and male and female dogs, all at the highest priority. I also requested plump helmets at the highest priority, bulls at medium priority, all types of booze at medium priority, and many types of meat and leather at low priority. The next year, the caravan brought me 2 cows, 1 steel bar, 1 pig iron bar, 1 piece of marble (but none of the other type of flux stone), 1 male dog and 1 female dog. AND ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE. It was more than 4000 under the weight limit! The total value of the goods it carried was only a couple thousand (after doubling the price due to highest-priority requests for those items). Or maybe it was closer to 1000. I think caravans usually carry about 10,000 or 20,000 worth of goods and are within 1000 of the weight limit (sometimes within 100 of the weight limit). I think it says on Dwarf Fortress wiki that caravans bring more food and booze than usual if your stocks are low, as long as it has enough room in the weight limit to do so. When this insanely lightly loaded caravan with no food or booze came, I was completely out of booze. I think it says on Dwarf Fortress Wiki that the amount of profits influences the contents of the next year's caravan. The first time the dwarven caravan came, I traded a bunch of green glass corkscrews in exchange for all the food, booze, empty barrels, seeds, leather, and empty bags that the caravan had.

I can't reproduce this. My caravans are just fine in spite of requesting a lot of different things. My best guess would be that you're not giving them enough profit for them to satisfy your requests. |

Sounds like they brought as much as they were willing to risk. Profit = value of stuff sold - value of stuff you trade to them. Just because you bought out the caravan, if you shorted them on their stuff or they made a meagre profit that doesn't mean they'll suddenly go "wow these guys are great to trade with". If you're going to wiki pages about caravans & use them as evidence of bugs, first learn how the caravans actually load up their cargo before they depart for your fortress. Not a bug. |

Yeah I'm tempted to agree with Malibu Stacey on this one, using the wiki as evidence of it being broken is certainly not helping. It sounds like you didn't give them enough profit and they're leery of bringing extra stuff (did you accidentally steal their stuff, maybe?). |

This happens every single time I request animals from the dwarven caravan. (Or at least, every time I request big animals like cows.) It never happens when I don't request animals. And as I already said, I bought LOTS of stuff the first time the caravan came, namely ALL the food, booze, empty barrels, seeds, leather, and empty bags. And possibly the sand bags too. And I bought it all with a broker who had NO social skills at all, thus a 3 to 2 trade was the best I could do, so I gave them lots of profit on the deal. And I'm 100% sure I didn't accidentally steal anything from them. There have been plenty of times when I didn't buy very much in the first year, but didn't request any animals, and so got a decent caravan. This is very clearly a very reproducible bug that is triggered by requesting very heavy items, with grazing animals (and a couple of different ores) being the heaviest items. Try requesting gold nuggets, platinum nuggets, and all grazing animals, all at the highest priority, and see if you still get a normal caravan then. |

Unable to reproduce (my caravan arrived with "allowed weight: 50") http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5061 |
