Summary | 0004425: No lignite or bioluminous coal
Description | Every time I generate a world and find a good place to embark on (Flux, Metal, River, No Aquifer) I cannot find any coal. I have even used a reveal hack and cannot find and coal veins or clusters.
Steps To Reproduce | Generate new world

This is probably to be considered "normal" - if you want more minerals, then increase the Mineral Occurrence setting when you generate a world. |
Other people are finding both lignite and bituminous coal: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=80784.msg2137707#msg2137707 You need to take into consideration the fact that the mineral preferences you specify in the finder may impact your ability to find other minerals like coal. Try looking for coal in different kinds of sites. |
I have tried many different sites with mineral occurrence set to everywhere and i cannot find any fuel at all. |
I have found plenty of lignite and coal, especially with high mineral frequency in world gen settings, but the new layer viewer makes sediment layers difficult to find. Charcoal and magma should be always accessible, however, even if it takes more risk and effort. |
Sedimentary layers are also main iron source. Embark layer viewer needs to show them. |
ditto. There is something screwy going on. Set Mineral Scarcity to 1000 and 40 embark sites later no lignite or BC to be seen yet. Started a few forts for testing and checked import agreement and no coal, coke, etc in any form. Would be nice if there was a diagnostic output of the world mineral values. |
dfprospector will help you. And also, is the game modded in any way? Once I broke all the coal raws (and more) by duping an ID. |
I experiences something similar. When I created worlds with custom parameters, I never found a location with a sedimentary stone layer (which are the only ones that can contain lignite or bituminous coal). When I had a flux layer, it always was marble (which is not a sedimentary stone). However, when I created worlds without custom parameters, I was able to find sedimentary layers, UNLESS I set mineral occurrence to maximum. I didn't try this often, and I din't use reveal etc., but Sw1ss4rmy, you might want to see if using the standard world creation and varying mineral occurrence 'solves' this problem. |
Reminder sent to: Zara Are you aware that a higher MINERAL_SCARCITY means that minerals will be less abundant? |
EXACTLY,this is why I am filing this under BUGS. It might be possible that world generation is somehow broken, and setting Mineral Scarity to Everywhere or to 100 in the custom settings kills the sedimentary layers. |
Setting it to "EVERYWHERE" definitely will break things, as only numerical parameters are accepted. 100 should work, though. |
I am going to be more specific here: 1) I designed several worlds with advanced parameters, and set "Mineral Scarity" to 100 (as low as possible). In these worlds, I chose locations with flux and shallow metals. With several tries, I had locations with marble (thus flux) but without any sedimentary stone, and thus no coal. This could just been bad luck, of course. 2) I created several worlds with the "Create new world!" option and set minerals to "Everywhere". In these worlds I looked for flux stone in the embark screen, but couldn't find any - I tried a location and found coal, but no flux at all. (At least not mentioned in the embark menu). Using the finder it didn't show any flux, too, even when I tried a large world. In one world I created with Mineral Occurrence set to sparse, I found a starting location with dolomite, magnetite and bituminous coal, though. I suspect that this is a bug. I will try to create some more worlds and see if I get the same results. Unless this is something that depents on the OS or some other config, it should be easy to reproduce this. |
