Summary0000471: Large Worlds often cause crashing, graphical corruption
DescriptionWhen generating the default or larger world parameters, the screen often stops updating and hangs, or may experience on-screen graphical corruption and extremely slow generation (0000019:0000010-15 events after a 5-6 second delay) and crash on completion, or fail to finish within reasonable time (3 hours).

Previous versions work fine. Confirmed not likely PC or OS related issue inherent to hardware or OS.
Game runs apparently fine after worldgen completes successfully.
Steps To ReproduceGenerate larger worlds, or use default 'Create Now' option on main screen.

Occurs roughly 1 in 8 times.
Additional InformationPossibly graphically related?

PC:
Motherboar: ASRock AOD790G/128M
AMD Phenom II X3 720 (Default mode, Cool'n'Quiet Enabled, L3 Allocation 'All Cores')
4 GB [2x2GB] DDR2-1066 (5-5-5-16-32-2T, unganged, dual channel)
ATI Radeon HD 4830

All other games, benchmarks run fine- no errors.

Also occurs on a Vista system with AMD X4. Does not occur on Intel Atom (however worldgen takes extremely long normally on Atom)
No other systems available for testing ATM

Related to 0000217, 0000216, 0000046, 0000006 - when you say "Graphical Corruption" I assume you mean you're playing with Graphics on? I mean, the game is normally just text, so...

No, I mean as in 'the default tileset becomes corrupted, with broken images similar multicolored square, garbled text, after images, etc.' in places there clearly should be none within the dwarf fortress screen.

Well the current world gen is quite a greedy little pig. So some people are having some issues with the generation of super large worlds. As logic points out, there's several tickets on the subject.

You're the first I think I've seen that's mentioned screen corruption when it happens however. I'm not sure what that might mean here. It could simply be another symptom of your hardware under extreme duress from all the memory allocated in the worldgen process. Hardware does some funny stuff when it gets stressed.

I doubt that's the case, since I can run Entropia Universe for 30+ hours without problem, Borderlands for 8, and the system very recently passed a 72 hour (I was on vacation) MEMTEST86, which I swear by. (It regularly finds problems games don't.)

So i'm very hard pressed to beleive mine AND another different PC are both experiencing the same problem due to identical forms of hardware failure.

After some research, I DO see that DF can sometimes exceed the 2GB barrier. If it is a program that can run on Win95/98, then chances are it is limited to a 2GB address barrier, and is causing an overflow/memory corruption of some sort when it breaks said 2GB barrier (AFAIK, any program that even says it can address more than 2,147,483,647 bytes will immediately crash on 9x systems)

Very probable considering DF does not in any past version or even on a massive 16x16 map use more than 500 MB normally, only during this wierd worldgen bug.

I'm also having the issue. But I managed to get some parameters that has the problem consistently. The vanilla LARGE ISLAND and LARGE REGION work fine. My custom 256X256 LARGE COASTLINE Freezes up every-time I run it.

The raws are modded in my copy, that could have something to do with it, but since it only happens in one parameter set I don't think so.

I put up the folder on DFFD ....here ->http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2063
