Summary | 0004750: The game does not save my fortresses.
Description | I have tried this 5 times, and every time i make a new fortress and save it, the game doesnt save. When i save and dont "x" out of the game, the save is there, but if i do "x" out of the game, the save has magically dissapeared and I have to restart the fortress. The world remains, just the saved fortress is gone.
Steps To Reproduce | Start a fortress, save it, "x" out of game, launch game, save is gone.
Additional Information | This makes the game all but unplayable, any help at all would be appreciated.
Tags | Fortress, loading, repreducable, saves, saving, unplayable

How are you running the game, and where is the game's folder located? |
What exactly do you mean by '"x" out of the game'? If I press the [X] button in the upper-right corner (using the Windows SDL version), it acts as if I pressed Esc and brings up the Options menu (which includes the "Save Game" option). |
By "X" out of the game i mean exit the game, not actually pres the "X" key. Sorry, that was pretty unclear. The game's folder is in a second folder with Dwarf therapist and a different tileset, this folder is on my desktop. I am running the game with slight changes to the raws, but even without the changes I get the same problem. |
Did you extract the game from the .zip? Have you tried running as an administrator? |
I extracted it with winrar, and I dont know how to run as an administrator. |
If you installed Dwarf Fortress in C:\Program Files and you're running Windows Vista/7, then it would certainly explain the problems you're seeing - ordinary users are not allowed to modify files in that location, so any time you save your game it's going to put the files somewhere else (within your user profile) and Windows will try (and, in this case, seemingly fail) to feed those files back to DF when it asks for them. To run as an administrator, right-click on "Dwarf Fortress.exe" and choose "Run as administrator". Alternatively, if you install the game in a directory where you have full write permissions (e.g. on your desktop), it should all work properly. |
