Summary0004844: Constant freeze-ups in Win7 Pro 64-bit
DescriptionWhen I start Dwarf Fortress it will freeze as the "fireworks" animation for the word "QUALITY" goes off. Sometimes I can get further into the program, to the point-allocation screen before embark, before it freezes. Never got any further than that, though. Tried using compatibility modes for XP SP2 and XP SP3, same things happened, no improvement.
Steps To Reproduceunzipped DF 31.25 zip into a directory on HDD
launched DF by double clicking the EXE
that's it

Have you tried changing the display mode in data/init/init.txt?

To what? Full-screen? A different window size?

My current init.txt file. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by changing the display mode, could you clarify?

The PRINT_MODE parameter. The available options are described in in init.txt. Also, make sure your graphics drivers are up-to-date.

I tried the 2D, STANDARD, TEXT, FRAME_BUFFER, 2DASYNC, and PARTIAL:0 settings for that parameter. The PARTIAL:0 resulted in unreadable output, and the TEXT was unsupported. The others all crashed in the same manner as before. Ensured that drivers for the Radeon HD 5700 were up to date. Crashes still occur. EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I tried the various PRINT_MODE parameters a second time post-driver update.

EDIT: Could the sound have something to do with this?

YET ANOTHER EDIT: The reason I mention the sound is because there are sound events at the "Bay 12 Games" screen (the "beyond quality!" slogan is spoken aloud) and in the pre-embark point allocation screen there is music when a dwarf's individual characteristics are viewed by pressing v. And yet I haven't experienced crashes at any other sound event (the animated intro and the main menu namely). Not YET anyway.

I have started a game using a hasty pre-made embark setup (to attempt to avoid any crashes) and embarked into a new settlement. I have tried to provoke a crash here to no avail (messing with volume, entering dwarves' characteristics screens, assigning area designations, pausing and unpausing, changing screen with Tab). It runs a little too fast but other than that it acts stable during actual gameplay.

Could not provoke a crash at main menu either.

EDIT: Game froze briefly after generating a new world, as it was offloading units, but recovered shortly after. (unrelated?)

If you suspect sound is the culprit, you can disable that in init.txt. Let us know what happens.

Set SOUND to NO in init.txt and started DF up. Repeatedly attempted to trigger the lockup at the Bay 12 Games "Beyond Quality" screen, at least 25 times. Did not trigger once. Went to embark prep point allocation screen, mercilessly alternated between v and Esc to visit and leave the dwarf characteristics screen for minimum 30 seconds (v esc v esc v esc ad nauseum) and no crash. Turned sound back on and attempted to trigger the "beyond quality" lockup, did it on second try. Didn't bother trying to trigger the other lockup after that. Set sound back to NO again and it is behaving well.

I rather liked the music, too. :(

EDIT: My soundcard is listed in Device Manager as "AMD High Definition Audio Device" and "SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio". Onboard sound. Unsure of driver status.

EDIT 2: Drivers are up to date for both.

Sorry, I have no idea. Feel free to reopen this if you have more information.
