Summary0000548: Smelting steel and pig iron requires 2 pieces of coal per operation
DescriptionFormerly, Smelting Steel and Pig Iron required the use of a single piece of coke or charcoal, regardless of whether the smelter was magma powered or regular. It now requires one piece of coke for magma smelters, and two for non-magma.

Of course, this assumes the change is not intentional.

I'd believe it if this were intentional. It makes more sense, and it's not like steel is too hard to get for how good it is.

I think this might be a "fix".

Just from a practical standpoint, it seems odd to use the same piece of wood that you are going to use for your fire to add carbon to your steel?

I think Toady stated it's a feature. One piece of coal for the fire, one piece of coal for carbon.

The raws include a coal bar as one of the reagents for those reactions. It definitely seems intentional.

Interestingly, the old 2D version (0.23.130.23a and earlier) ALSO required 2 units of coal to smelt pig iron and steel in a non-magma smelter. It's possible that the behavior in 0.28.x was the bug and that it's now been fixed.

The 40D Raws have the [FUEL] and [REAGENT:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:COAL:NO_MATGLOSS] Tags for Steel and Pig Iron making as well, hence why I am unsure as to whether it is a bug or not. The new way does make sense, but better to report it and be wrong than let it fly under the radar.

But doesn't steel (at least good steel) have a low amount of carbon in it? Adding in that much carbon would probably make it too brittle.

Actually, reaction not changed. In 40d and 0.31.01 both pig iron and steel require fuel AND coal (so in non-magma smelters it's 2 coal units) to make.

nitpick: when did we ever smelt steel? didn't we 'make steel' and 'make pig iron' ?

After reading through this again, the raws certainly support this as intentional (the posts above detail this) - 1 fuel and 1 coal for the standard workshop and 1 coal (no fuel) for the magma version.
