Summary | 0005713: Alt-move involving water is required sporadically and inconsistently
Description | In adventure mode, river/stream swimming (movement from one water square to another) sometimes requires alt-move. It seems to be related to the time of day; for a certain block of 1-6 hours, approximately anywhere from 1-in-4 to 1-in-16 squares of water movement in a straight line will require alt-move to be successful. Other times, even along the same stretch of water, it will rarely or never be necessary. It's possible that this could also be related to the animation of the water itself; calm-looking water seems to require alt-move less frequently. Also, only about 1 attempt in 20 to move into any water body from land doesn't require alt-move, while alt-move is seemingly never required to move out again.
Steps To Reproduce | - Swim up and down a river/stream for a long time - Attempt to move into water here and there until the game lets you enter water without alt-move
Additional Information | http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=102627.msg3033698#msg3033698 seems to corroborate the second paragraph above. The behavior in the first paragraph could be intended to simulate the difficulty of swimming in a strong current. It could also be related to swimming skill level. I did wonder if it could be happening when an unskilled swimmer attempting the same movement would have been drowning. I don't know. I'm not sure why anyone would intentionally move into the space above a body of water, since the only effect seems to be to stun the player and thus increase the risk of drowning. So I don't know why the player needs that choice.

I can help explain this, anytime your moving from water 1-6 deep to a spot thats 7 deep, it REQUIRES you to ALT+Move. There is a reason for it to be this way, but I am not at all sure its the right way to do things. I have also found this to be quite irritating while trying to grind up combat and swimming. |
