Basically, the miners stop mining and responding to designations to mine after a while of not doing any mining. From what I can see of their inventory, nothing looks particularly out of place.
Additional InformationI was under siege for a few months before this, so that may have something to do with it.

Are your miners assigned or restricted to a burrow, and are the designations in question outside that burrow?

 Possibly, I will have to double-check since I was under siege at the time.

Edit: Good call! I must have forgot to designate extra space for digging when first adding to the burrow.
