Summary0006331: Migrants don't arrive after frozen river thaws
DescriptionI've been playing for 2.75 years thus far, and have received no migrants, only dwarven caravans. The only quirk I can think of is that I started at a site with a frozen river, ON the river itself, below a waterfall. I dug into the river and ground below, and walled up the sides so when it melted I could live under the river. The quirk this leads to is that the only caravan that comes, which is dwarven, literally comes up the frozen river in late fall, even though I have access to all the rest of the map. The river is in a canyon on all sides, with no access to flat ground above initially (though I built stairs up to it long ago), so if humans and elves were to try that exact route, they would have no way in because they come when it is all melted. That said, however, the migrants never come at all, even though they could conceivably come in late fall through early spring via this route, if they had to. I did, as of year 2ish (because 7 dwarves can only make so much wealth while trying to build a whole system for bringing magma 50+ levels to the surface, especially since 2 of them have been resting with injuries since year 1) start getting goblin attacks, which I ward off each season with a standard battery of cage traps, but the goblins always come on the surface, never through the frozen river, so it is surely possible to come through the surface.
Also of note, I get no 'attracted no immigrants this season' messages, or any 'bypassed your site' messages from potential caravan visits. I simply have never gotten any immigrants, or caravans of civs other than dwarves.
Steps To Reproduce1. Start at a site where 2 rivers meet such that you start ON the river when it is frozen, but below the waterfall and in such a way that it's sheer cliffs on all sides of the river. Survive and get in/on something before it unfreezes ^.^
2. Wait, while doing whatever.
Additional InformationI looked at other entries, and the wiki, to see if I could figure out what it might be... Here's the checking:
I have checked for civs, and it says it has all my civs (humans, dwarves, elves, goblins (not at war, just --------).
I've yet to lose any dwarves. All are alive (though two haven't left bed in two years due to injuries that I lack the skill to heal), so it's not due to dwarf deaths. Also, I've never lost a caravan - the dwarven ones, the only ones that come, have never even seen a goblin (at least in my fort).
I have been steadily creating a good amount of wealth, currently 66500, with imported wealth 32312, and exported wealth 48472.
My pop cap is set at 80.
They aren't likely to be intercepted by goblins, as the caravans arrive just fine and seemingly unharassed.
Um... can't think of anything else at the moment.

Reminder sent to: Pickerel

Toady'll probably need the save for something potentially obscure like that. Please upload the save (whole region folder) to the DFFD (http://dffd.wimbli.com/) and post a link to it here.

Okay, in my inneptitude it took a bit, but I figured it out eventually (and learned how to zip folders). Here it is!

Okay, new update. I decided to try again to see if it was indeed the starting on a frozen river thing, and I have confirmed that this is the case. If you start on a frozen river with sheer cliffs for sides, you will ONLY EVER receive those migrants or merchants that arrive when the river is frozen.

This time I chose an even colder climate to extend the frozen time, and sure enough migrants appear in the fall and spring, though so close to the time of thaw that they barely get inside in time and if I ever had a larger migration the tail end would likely die, because they appear on the edge of the map on the frozen river. The dwarven caravan comes just like last time, and always appears - again like last time - at the edge of the map on the frozen river, though when I blocked one direction they WERE able to appear on the river from the opposite direction. I played for 3 years and never received a single human or elven caravan, though the river is thawed by the time they would arrive, and when the undead tower seiged they appeared on the frozen river (and I ignored them all winter so soon they plopped into the water when it thawed. Later I let them out so I could test out the whole undead dwarves in cages bug.). I never received any messages about caravans bypassing my site or about not attracting migrants in a season. I had, however, explicitely made my trading post accessible to all other parts of the map.

It seems as though the game searches for viable entry points at embark, and does not revamp this decision at a later time, so anything whose entry point becomes a no-longer extant entry - like the surface of a frozen river which becomes no longer a standable tile once it thaws - is unable to accommodate new routes and such and so can never arrive.

save file is here (originally made for the dwarves in cages bug, hence the name, but works here):
