Summary0006509: When trying to launch vanilla DF, nothing happens
Description  I felt like playing DF out of nowhere, so I went to reinstall it on my computer. I haven't downloaded any mods for it ever, or had any previously existing files. When I unzipped the folder and extracted the application like normal.
  The problem is when I try to run the application, it ends up doing nothing but load up a process visible from the task manager that disappears after 10 seconds.
Steps To Reproduce1. Open dwarf fortress application
Additional InformationNo mods and no ghost files to haunt from dwarf's past.
TagsNo tags attached.

My guess is that you haven't extracted the zip file. Make sure you're not running from a 'compressed folder'.

I did extract the zip, which is also why the dwarf fortress icon is a dwarf and not a default exe icon

oh ok; sorry. All I can say is I just downloaded and ran on Win7 and it worked fine then. Which doesn't help you.

It sounds like Dwarf Fortress might be crashing on startup. Check your system's Reliability History and see if there's anything relevant there - if there is, you might consider capturing a crash dump, uploading it somewhere, and posting a link here.

Yes, but with the actual .mdmp file (you might need to change some registry settings to make Windows actually save it).

From your screenshot, it looks like something's crashing in the sound code - try editing data\init\init.txt and changing [SOUND:YES] to [SOUND:NO] and see if that helps at all.
