Summary | 0007260: Militia will not pick up armor
Description | I have a single militia dwarf to whom I have assigned a full suit of copper armor, but he does not seem to be picking it up or even attempting to do so, despite having been given ample time.
Steps To Reproduce | Create a new fortress, prepare carefully. Give one dwarf skilled axedwarf, competent dodger, novice shield user and novice armor user. Add one copper battle axe, one copper breastplate, one copper helm, one copper greaves, two copper gauntlets, and two copper high boots to your equipment. Embark, make that dwarf militia commander and create a squad. Assign the specific equipment you carried to that dwarf. Order the squad to attack something or patrol somewhere. He will not pick up the equipment.

Have you set "Replace clothes" in the Military->Equip screen? Dwarves wear enough civilian clothes that they can't put any additional armor on their head, hands and feet unless set to "Replace clothes". Still they should have put on axe, breastplate and greaves at least. |
I followed your steps to reproduce and with 'over clothing' my dwarf equipped the axe, breastplate and greaves. I changed to 'replace clothing' and he dropped his civilian clothing and correctly equipped the rest of his assigned military equipment. |
I hadn't any problem with equipping in 0.40,01, though it is granted there are many situations possible. |
For this reason 'over clothing' is pretty much useless since 0.34. Previously it would run some code that would remove enough civilian stuff so that the military stuff fits, but there were ussues with it, and apparently it was simply removed. |
Yeah I agree. One of the changes that made it worse is that since 34.xx caps have [SHAPED] tag, which means they can't be worn with helms, so civilian-clothed dwarf simply can't get any armor on the most important place - the head... All you can do without having to replace all his clothes, is giving him some extra hoods. |
Ok, I have confirmed that changing the equipment to replace clothing fixes this. |
Thanks for the follow-up...please use the suggestions forum for any wanted changes to the current equipment system. |
