Summary | 0007503: Medical dwarves don't prioritize stanching blood flow
Description | I injured two dwarves in a mining accident in late Moonstone. They were brought to the hospital with all of their limbs broken, and my medical dwarf has been attending to them. Their prognoses were good, as besides the broken limbs they had only bruising. Now it's late Granite - 3 months later - and they're both suffering from severe blood loss. It's as though they've been steadily bleeding out since they had their accidents.
Steps To Reproduce | Break some dwarves' limbs, 0000003:0000002 places per limb Allow the survivors medical treatment

has duplicate | 0007924 | resolved | Dwarves bleeding to death due to minor wounds: severely aggravating |
Both dwarves did eventually die from bleeding out, 4 months after sustaining their injuries. |
Do you have enough cloth for wounds to be dressed? Do you have a separate wound dresser, or do your doctors all have all health labors enabled? |
I had more than enough cloth. I only had one medical dwarf at the time, with all medical labors enabled. I turned off all his non-medical labors though, so he was doctoring full time. I know that with multiple doctors my miners probably would have survived, but it seems to me that if medical dwarves will prioritize repairing fractures and setting limbs while their patients are literally bleeding to death, that's a bug. |
I'd call it an oversight or lack of feature; but yeah, it would be nice to see the system improved. Though I think it'd be cool if only skilled doctors can prioritize their work properly. |
For my part, I'd call minor wounds (as in 0007924, for example) not clotting and healing on their own (absent infection, syndromes, etc.) a bug in creature physiology, not a flaw in health care. The descriptions at 0007924 and 0008137 make it sound like this might be specific to small body parts, like ears and noses. I vaguely remember reading something on the forum about editing raws to avoid that problem, but I can't find the post. Edit: Over at 0008137, fortunawhisk wrote that problems like this are (sometimes) due to certain tissue types (such as cartilage, which should be present in noses and ears) not having healing rates specified in the raws. |
I do think that something changed physiology to keep wounds bleeding; but it's definitely not localized to small body parts. The only injuries my dwarves suffered for the initial report were to their limbs. |

I have another save with this issue here, in 0.40.23: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=10481 The dwarf Mosus Balducim has cuts in only his hair and scalp, but is now Pale and suffering Severe Blood Loss. When he was originally injured, he went to the hospital and was Evaluated and Cleaned, but was not diagnosed as needing any additional treatment. The skin of every cut is Infected, and the hair is Torn Apart. |
