When regaining consciouness, the elephant attempted to flee, leaving 4 dwarves with the job 'Soldier (no reachable valid target)', of which 3 dwarves were not standing directly next to the elephant and 1 dwarf directly behind him. 2 other dwarves had their jobs changed to 'Kill Elephant' - both were standing directly next to him. |

v0.40.10: A pikegoblin in my fortress fell unconscious and became "unreachable". Upon awakening, she proceeded to slaughter my fortress while my military stood next to her (without attacking), some displaying "(no reachable valid target)". I let it run, and after 7 days of mayhem and 10+ kills one of my speardwarves finally attacked her. http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9556 |

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8165 I've got my own problems which may have stemmed from the same thing. These dwarves do not attack the goblin until some time after it starts slaughtering my people. |
|
Upon further testing, falling unconscious does not seem to be required. Falling one or more z-level, however, does seem to trigger this bug. Perhaps a creature who dodges/falls into open space is marked "unreachable" until the next job-processing update? Anyway, due to the setup of my fortress (open central stairway with military ambushing from below) this problem occurs frustratingly frequently. |

Version .40.10 I currently have two unconscious goblins (lone survivors of the latest siege, their colleagues got slaughtered), surrounded by five of my military (two axedwarves, three marksdwarves) all of whom display "no reachable valid target". They did NOT dodge into a different Z-level, and their compatriot who had become unconscious was dispatched as soon as it woke up. So while it may not be necessary for the target to be unconscious, it still is enough to cause the bug. Additional info: all five of my soldiers are "over-exerted", though whatever they're doing is not dealing with the goblins. I can post a save if it would help. Edit: When one of the two goblins woke up, it proceeded to slaughter my military while the soldiers stood around and did nothing. Further edit: Reloaded the save and checked the reports. One goblin is deflecting attacks with its "cave spider silk hood", the other goblin's "jaguar leather hood" is resulting in all attacks only giving bruises. Incidentally, ALL attacks are targeting the victims' HEADS, NOTHING ELSE. I think this is the actual bug: all attacks get automatically targeted to the head when the target is unconscious, but attackers should be able to choose and strike the most vulnerable part of their unconscious target (which apparently ISN'T the head). Final edit: Sending out a squad of wrestlers finished the two goblins off pretty quickly. Reading through the combat reports, both goblins had a wrestler choke them to death, while all other attacks were aimed at the head. |

version .40.12 Cave crocodile came in and attacked my sheep. Initially he was met with punches but after the squads sent to kill him knocked him out all attacking of the croc stopped, idle dwarves try to pick up the equipment off the severed limbs he's laying on. and he wakes up to half heartedly snap at them. 20 [Edit: 11] dwarves marched directly into his stomach and many attempts were made to convince the squads that he was indeed a valid reachable target over 2(I think) months until the 1st of slate when a whole bunch of citizens started beating it down including rimtar melbilsigun who hacked it in the brain with a pick. During this months-long period a hunter briefly tried to hunt it and shot it numerous times with a crossbow. I tried turning hunting on and off a bunch of dwarves because I thought maybe the military was deferring to a hunter (who knows?). I have saves during and after. |

Confirmed in .40.14 also; I've got a fortress going quite well, which attracted the attention of a minotaur. Since I sent my two full squads (10 archers, 10 leather armor melee) to station in its path. The minotaur attacked one of my melee dwarfs, killing it, while the rest stood there gawking. I explicitely sent them to kill the minotaur, and all of them stood there 'no reachable valid target'. It seems the minotaur also has a bit of trouble attacking the dwarfs, since it has survived for about two seasons now. EDIT: the minotaur climbed a tree before attacking my military, which might be a factor. EDIT2: this is a recurrent issue, and has a boatload of replicates and relatives. Perhaps someone could gather all these issues together? |

A save of mine from 40.19 has this bug, kill commands are not working due to a false 'no reachable valid target' flag. A bronze colossus intruder decided to climb trees and kill the wildlife before entering my fort where I had a welcoming party for him. Though apparently my dorfs cannot attack him and are not in the slightest aware of him.. even after being attacked multiple times and kicked around like bean bags if they were told to go back to sparring they would. (I removed the barracks so they wouldn't spar) Weapon traps were hitting him and it seems war dogs were still able to attack him, or he just decided to kill them first. Anyway, I'm new to this site and unfamiliar with the search, I did try to look but couldn't find anything (I also don't have much time). So here is the save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10165 EDIT: I forgot to mention that you can find the bronze colossus in my barracks beating on the helpless dwarfs to the right of where you start when you load. Update: I went back to the save and watched for fun. I turned off the attack order on all my squads as if there was nothing. It seemed that all my military (and even a 1 civilian) was stuck in place, to the point where they were getting thirsty and hungry and even sleeping. None of them died from dehydration / starvation though. The odd thing is that it attacked one of my miners (killing them) and then proceeded to attack one of my militia captains, then she fought back and the whole group of dwarfs piled on the bronze colossus killing it instantly. Basically, I have no idea what just happened. |
