Summary0007750: Dwarves refuse to haul crops from farm after a few years.
DescriptionDespite there being plenty of barrels and wheelbarrows available, and the food stockpile having ample free space left, dwarves refuse to harvest crops for storage. They will only harvest single plants for immediate use.

This typically happens after a year or two of normal behavior.

Here is a save where this is happening: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9212

Possibly related to http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=6668 ?

looking at the save, I notice there's some inefficiency with the stockpiles/hauling. Planters are not going to the nearby stockpile for seeds, they have to crawl down into the fortress proper for seeds. This leaves farmers spending more time retrieving single seeds to plant than they do actually planting. Is that leaving them too busy to consider harvesting? Is that a sign of a general hauling problem and not a harvest problem?

Working with the save...
Delete burrows, check. Remake stockpile, check. Have empty barrels, check. Have empty bags, check. Remake farm plot, check. Have idle haulers: Check. Have idle farmers: Check.

I see dwarves come to harvest the plants, but they leave empty-handed with no job. I can't properly explain the failure to move seeds to the seed stockpile, instead they remain on chairs.

If it's a gameplay error, I don't see it.

None of those stockpiles are changed from when the fort was founded either. The dwarves farmed and harvested without incident for the first few years. I only noticed a problem when dwarves started to give "Unable to give food" announcements and I checked my stocks to see I had hundreds of plump helmet spawns, but no plump helmets. So I began watching my farmers and saw this behavior.

So I don't know what happened to cause this behavior suddenly.

I have a problem like this. After about 5 years in my fort, the dwarves stopped hauling food barrels with harvested plants back to the food stockpile. As far as I know, everything related to the food industry hasnt changed since very early in the fort. Yet, when plants are harvested they put them in barrels and just leave the barrel where it is.

remaking the stockpile succeeds in resetting the dwarves' behavior

Have you tried with the save given here? Remaking the stockpiles, farms, etc does not correct the behavior in this save (as torrenal verified above).
