Summary | 0008181: Hunted Corpses Not Hauled/Butchered correctly
Description | If a hunter kills a creature above ground but does not immediately start a "return with kill" job, the corpse becomes inaccessible through standard means, specifically manual butcher jobs do not cause the corpse to be butchered. However, if surface refuse collection is enabled AND there is a stockpile that can accept the corpse, the hunted corpse will be hauled and then automatically butchered. If surface refuse collection is enabled but there is no refuse stockpile that can accept the corpse, it will remain inaccessible. If there is a refuse stockpile that can accept the corpse, but surface refuse collection is disabled, the corpse will remain inaccessible. If the corpse is located in a refuse stockpile and surface refuse collection is disabled, the corpse can be butchered by manually queuing a job at a butchery, but will not automatically be butchered.
Steps To Reproduce | Create some hunters, have them kill game. Eventually one will abandon a body. It happens very, very often, especially with novice hunters.
Additional Information | This seems to be related to the dwarf being exhausted or hungry after the hunt. Rather than queuing up the haul kill job, they instead go sleep or eat, which strands the corpse in limbo. After they finish tending to their own needs, they'll often start hunting new game and leave the corpse. Here is a save with a corpse that was hunted but is currently not butcherable (I have turned off surface collection). The horse is located on the very southern border of the map near the frozen stream: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9551

It might be related, but I also had a lot of hunters go hand-to-hand with their prey. One of whom was killed by a horse. With that, hunters that killed prey in hand-to-hand combat seemed far more likely to abandon the kill. This might be because hunters that got into these fights often drove themselves to exhaustion, passing out multiple times before finally killing their prey. Additionally, wounded creatures who die of their injuries rather than of a direct hit from a hunter seem almost invariably abandoned. |

Pretty sure 0004459 covers this, but please reopen if not. |
