| Description | character picked up a quest to kill some bandits, traveled to the site (which happened to be in the midst of a goblin pit, so maybe the bandits were goblins?) Anyway, went to the site, and found some empty towers and some gutters dug out in between them, but no signs of life or unlife there to be found. | ||||

Are you sure that they didn't run away before you saw them? Also, did you look around close by? there can be camps next to the site. |

It's possible, I guess. Hypothetically they could be running away, but there are canyons and empty buildings, and the entire place looks uninhabited. And this has happened more than once, always in goblin pits. Lots of pits, no goblins to be seen. |

Reminds me of a similar issue with Forest Retreats which are occupied by bandits/criminals/warbands where you see nobody, but if you go to fast travel, there will be *s chasing you around trying to ambush you. Except you can't fast travel in goblin sites. |

There was another time when I was walking around the edge of a huge goblin complex and saw one goblin, just standing around. I struck him down, but that was it. |

I can confirm this with a goblin pits which is supposedly inhabited by bandits, but the site is completely abandoned, even checked with DFhacks reveal. |
