Summary | 0008497: Segmentation fault
Description | Shortly after loading this save, say 1 or 2 minutes, the game crashes, and "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" is printed to the log. Since this log is not available on Windows I'm not sure if this will be that easy to narrow down. I thought putting the core dump here would be helpful, but I couldn't find it. :/ The first time this crash occurred I looked at the gamelog.txt, and I saw a message that I didn't see in-game. It said that the outpost liaison and caravan from my parent civ arrived, so I think that the creation of the caravan and liaison might be related to the crash. Note that I tried to do this again a few times, but every other time I tried reproducing the crash, the message was not there. But since it was there the first time I still think it is related. Also, I did not get any visit from the elves in the previous season, and since it is the second year, I should be getting one. Another possibly related thing is that during the last winter and spring, I did not get any migrants. I did get migrants during the first summer, the first autumn, and the last summer, but not during the winter or spring. I don't know if this could be related, but possibly. (Some people on the forums suggested that the migrants may have died from the cold on the way to the fort.) I might want to put here that the save was generated in 40.13. I don't know if the crash also occurs in that version.
Steps To Reproduce | Load the save in 40.14, and wait a bit.

Forgot to put link to save, derp: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10010 |

It does not appear to be related to the caravan, but it seems to always occur on the 10th of Limestone. |

There are some crashy saves here http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8362 and here http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8398 Do they look like the same thing? I use Windows 7 not Linux Your save crashes on my computer too, btw. http://imagr.eu/up/5454fcb46162f_crash.png |

It's difficult to tell what the cause is, so I'm not sure if they're related, but reproducible save-specific bugs are almost never platform-specific. |

Latias1290: somehow, your world is heavily corrupted - the "discovered creatures/plants" lists for your fortress(1) are completely empty, and the ones for your civilization and local government(2) contain single bytes with nonsense values (for reference, they should contain one byte per valid creature/plant gloss). The actual crash is occurring when attempting to mark a plant as "discovered". (1) DFHack Lua "df.global.ui.tasks.discovered_*" (2) DFHack Lua "historical_entity.resources.discovered_*" |
|
@Quietust Does that mean that the save is irrevocably dead? Also, would disabling save compression prevent this kind of corruption in the future? |
|
@ptb_ptb Yes, they crash in the same way. The way windows handles it is way different though. Also, the first one you mentioned also says that they retired the fort earlier, which I did as well. That could narrow down the cause - maybe retiring forts is bugged. Not sure if it could be one of the symptoms, but briefly after unretiring my Woodcutter went melancholy saying that he was "overthrown by the stresses of day-to-day living". To the best of my knowledge none of my dwarves was unhappy before I unretired. I retired the fort due to the lack of migrants, which only seemed to appear during summer and autumn. I thought that they didn't arrive because they died of the cold on the way to the fortress. |
|
I believe that 0008362 is related to this, as I unretired the fort not long before the crash occurred on that save. |

Toady's comment at 0008362:0031563 makes this sound like it's a duplicate of 0008362. If you can reproduce this in 0.40.24+ with a fresh world (I'm not sure if existing worlds are fixable), please reopen this report or PM me on the forums. |
