Summary0008706: Background color of engrave designation (priority indicator) and marker of it are the same
DescriptionMarker has the colour of engraving. So designation of engraving looks the same as markings of it.
Steps To ReproduceDesignate some area for engraving
Switch to marker
Mark some nearby area for engraving
Try to find any difference
Additional Information...at least they seem the same to me, both by colour and symbol used (but usage of the same symbol is normal for marker designations).

It works so for designation of both floors and walls.

This is what I see in 0.40.23 with the default tileset and color scheme (the lower designation is a marker):

While the displayed priorities are the same color (which is probably expected, since DF only supports dark background colors), the symbols are different colors - the normal designation is light cyan, while the marker is dark cyan (which matches other designations). If they look the same to you, it's probably a problem with your color scheme (some graphics sets distribute different color schemes). If you're not sure, you can compare your data/init/colors.txt with the default one on the wiki: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Colors.txt
These are the relevant lines from the default colors.txt:
[CYAN_R:0]
[CYAN_G:128]
[CYAN_B:128]
<snip>
[LCYAN_R:0]
[LCYAN_G:255]
[LCYAN_B:255]

If these colors are very similar (or the same) in your file, I suggest that you report the problem to the maintainer of your graphics set or pack (or color scheme, I suppose, if it's a different person).
Edit: I checked other designations - out of "smooth stone", "engrave stone", and "carve fortifications", the only ones that have the same color are the markers for "smooth stone" and "engrave stone", and the difference there can be determined by whether the tile is already smoothed.

Detros clarified on the forums that they were referring to the background colors of the priority indicators. I'm not really sure what the best solution here is (changing the background of one to non-cyan or changing the foreground color), but it's probably suggestion territory, since there is a difference between the two indicators: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?board=5.0
