Summary0008709: Barrels already holding one category of food (leaves) won't hold another category (taro)
DescriptionIt seems that taro is a bit bugged out when it comes to hauling. First of all, my herbalist will not pick it up (with food hauling enabled) although it works with every other plant that I tried so far. It also seems to take longer for it to show up as a hauling job and once one of the dwarves tries to pick it up the job is cancelled. This leads to all of them wilting outside. Picking them up as part of a prepared meal works on the other hand.
Steps To Reproduce1. Find a taro plant and let your herbalist gather it
2. Enable food hauling and wait until taro shows up as a job
3. Try to pick it up

This sounds like a bug that was fixed in 0.40.20, 0005992. Please reopen this if your problem reproduces in the latest version of the game (currently 0.40.24).

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't see how this would be the same issue however. The one you linked describes how jobs are cancelled b/c the items required for it are in a barrel/bin that is currently being hauled. My issue has nothing to do with barrels. It's simply that the item isn't being picked up by my dwarves (no container involved). Nonetheless, I'll check out whether the issue still persists in a newer version and will get back to you.

Curiously, the hauling works fine if I create a new stockpile just for taro. I'm not sure why it does not work for the old one though...taro is activated as an item and there is enough space left in the barrel. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong here. The old stockpile is right beside the kitchen btw

 Does the "old stockpile" mean Food Stockpile #5? The one that has a single tile and a single barrel with stuff already in it?

When I load the save in 0.40.24, the manager immediately cooks the last two taros into a meal. There doesn't appear to be any more taro on the map. Not sure what I'm looking for here.

 Yes, that's the one. I know that items are collected faster, the bigger the stockpile is but shouldn't it still work?

I should have disabled the cooking job, true. It's the only way that I was able to collect them. There is plenty of taro to be gathered on the map left though.

The lone barrel is already a Spice Barrel, which means taro won't be placed there (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Using_bins_and_barrels#Food_Storage), and there's no room for more barrels. Adding a stockpile with more tiles fixes the problem.

Please reopen if that doesn't clear things up.
