Summary0008752: Trees spawn on up stairs
DescriptionI am trying to make 17x17 roof with walls over part of shallow valley. It is just one level above the valley floor so I am filling the valley floor with up stairs, putting down stairs on them and then row by row removing these two and replacing upper layer with stone walls. Two trees have already spawned on those up stairs ... and I am only like two thirds done so far.

The current tree is standing on up stairs (those are there just like a month or two) and around its trunk there is no other block. It spans like 5 levels up. And it is an apricot tree and it seems it spawned already with apricots (it's late summer now) but that may be a job for separate bugreport.
Steps To ReproduceProbably something like:

Cut trees in area
Fill area with up stairs
Wait few weeks
Note trees spawning on those stairs
Additional InformationMy embark site is in highly forested area which probably helps with reproduction of this bug: trees spawn much faster.

Save and world generated in 40.20, save moved to 40.21, then 40.23, then 40.24. No mods.

It seems now it is probably not connected to stairs. Some trees are now popping _inside_ those walls Aater I have finished that 17x17 wall and removed or those stairs.

It rather seems now like game just places down trees and doesn't check if the terrain has changed. Or, probably even more probable, is that that "Constructions are treated as inert terrain features when completed." (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Construction) is used also for tree spawning. But trees appearing 1) in area with granite block walls under them, the more, 2) with trunks on the tile where granite block wall used to be (and 3) it probably should be roots, not trunks down there) is quite a weird thing. Unless this is some veiled way to simulate corrosion of nature, like daisies appearing among old asphalt patches IRL.

I have noticed trees growing in mid-air after a cave in. They seem to grow above where single tile ponds were.

That may be it. My first intention for building that 17x17 wall was to cover my dwarves from cave-ins that occured there every few months. I guess those have been the same trees spawning in midair.

Just as an additional note: I cut those trees and I have now holes in my build, losing granite blocks. Though I guess trees spawning inside that wall may be still better than tree spawning in air, collapsing down on dwarves.

Trees that spawn in mid air hover there, levitating.
