Summary0008818: Caravans leaving without unloading goods.
DescriptionRecently I have encountered a bug in my 4-year old fortress in which my civilizations caravan never finished unloading it's goods and eventually left without trade ever being possible. This happened right when I became a barony, in case that is relevant. I have a save file backup to offload and shall play the month again to see whether I can fix this by demolishing and rebuilding the depot.

My first dwarf caravan worked fine, but when the elves came it just declared that they arrived but they never showed up on the map. They could have just been scared off by a kobold corpse, I don't know.

But the next two caravans, one dwarf and one elf, entered the map, with a single merchant and a pack animal, but no wagons. They proceeded to unpack until they left, without giving me a chance to trade.

I'm playing vanilla 42.06 on linux, rebuilding the depot did not help.

I can confirm this happening to me as well. Sometimes the caravans arrive without wagons, and unload forever, and sometimes I get announcement that a caravan has arrived but nobody actually arrives. No merchants on the unit lists, but all their items show up at stocks screen. If you zoom into them, there are none to be seen but the game zooms into an empty tile near a map edge where the caravan supposedly arrived.

If you play the game forward, you can actually send your trader to depot as if there actually were merchants, but there is no trade option. You also get "merchants of InvisibleTraderCompany are leaving soon in appropriate time.

The only workaround I've found to either of these is to save the game always when season changes, and reload from that save if the merchants are bugged. (I also save the game immediately after trading just in case)

Eh, since this is kind of two bugs, maybe the title should be changed something like "Partial/invisible caravans arrive, trade impossible", or should I make a separate bug report about the invisible ones?

Without a save, this is most likely a case of scared merchants dropping cargo (wagon scuttled) and fleeing/ending trade. I'm going to mark it a duplicate of 0007185; post any saves you have there. If it isn't that, then PM a manager on the forums.
