Summary0008902: Military dwarves stay at or return to the spot where they last killed another unit
DescriptionNot sure whether I picked the right category...feel free to change it if that makes more sense.

I appointed one of my dwarves as militia commander and sent him out to kill wildlife. With no weapon, it took him awhile but it worked out fine. Now here's the issue: he does not come back on his own. Maybe he believes that he is stationed there? If I give him a job, he will do it but go back outside to the spot where he killed animal right after he's done. I tried to change his schedule from inactive to active (no orders) but it doesn't make a difference. Creating a meeting area won't help either.

I found a reddit thread that describes a similar problem:

I actually just found a way to solve it: you have to save the game and restart DF. Once you do that, the inactive military dwarf returns to the others. I still think this should be treated as a bug though.
Steps To ReproduceShould be easy to reproduce but I can provide a save as well if needed:

1) Give one of your dwarves a kill order (not sure if they have to be commander or not)
2) After the kill, the dwarf will just sit there and don't go back to the fortress (unless he has another job)
3) If he goes back to do the next job, he will then return to his "station" outside afterwards

After checking some more, it turns out that the restart was not the solution. It seems to be the meeting area instead. What I still don't understand is why they would first path back to the location of their last kill and only THEN look for meeting areas...

This is a save where you can see the behavior. The dwarf dumps his latest kill (dump corpses under o-r), then immediately paths back towards the right edge (where he killed the groundhog). He is interrupted twice by dumping jobs, fulfills them, and immediately paths to the same spot again. Only after reaching the spot, he realizes that a meeting area exists and finally joins the rest.

May be connected to 0003470, "Ex-military dwarves remain at previous station location" or http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=147901 , "Military dorfs like to revisit certain sites".

I agree that it is connected. I never gave the dwarf an order for stationing though, so it seems to extend on 0003470 by adding kill commands.
