Crashes for me on vanilla DF 0.40.24 run on Ubuntu, too, with the same message. How many dwarves have you got in your fortress? Have you seen any forgotten beast there before?

Probably a form of save corruption, although the error message is unusual. How long have you played in this world? What modes (fortress, adventurer)? Do you use autosave or DFHack's quicksave script?

I had around 120 dwarves in the fortress. At the time I had at least 2 forgotten beasts in the caverns. They all had webs so I was too lazy to find a way to safely deal with them.

I believe this fortress was the first one in this world and I definitely had not played adventurer. I had played in the fortress for perhaps 5 years. I used seasonal autosaves from the starter pack but as far as I remember the game crashed for the first time while I was trying to save and exit the game. After that I couldn't load it.
I doubt it has anything to do with it but if I recall correctly it happened shortly after a goblin siege had arrived.

So the older saved versions have been overwritten?

Well, I'm not sure I understand your question correctly because as far as I know every time the game is saved the previous save is overwritten. As far as I know there is no way to save one world on different save files except by manually copying the save folder and I didn't do that. So I guess, yes, the older saved version have been overwritten.

Yes, that was my question. After few corrupted saves I am now used to copy save folder elsewhere at least once per each session of game year.

Seasonal autosaves are a DF feature, not a feature of whatever pack you're using. Did you also have backups enabled? Are there "region1-XXXXX-XX-XX" folders in data/save?

No, I didn't have backups enabled.
I guess this will teach me a lesson for any future worlds.
I had not payed any attention to the backup feature because I did not know there is a risk of save corruption. Oh well, now I know.
