Summary0000941: Intro, world generation very slow, progresses frame by frame
DescriptionI have played Dwarf Fortress before, a year ago on a different (less able) computer that was running XP. Dwarf Fortress ran fine on that. On this computer, however, it runs so slowly that I can't watch the intro or generate a large map without it either taking forever or the game ending by eating too much processing power and crashing. When I looked at task manager it was using 518 000 K of the memory, while other programs like Google Chrome were using only 20 000 K. The world progressed slowly year by year when loading the history. It seemed to be allieviated when I turned off the intro and changed the resolution, but it is still MUCH slower than my other, more inferior computer. This little netbook can handle World of Warcraft, I am running the small version of 0.31.02, had the same problem with the full version.
Steps To ReproduceStarting up Dwarf Fortress, running any world generation or watching the intro.
Additional InformationI have disabled the intro and am now running in windowed mode, 800 x 600 with the proper text. Intro progresses frame by frame. Running rivers, forming lakes, cave placements, world history creep by one number at a time, making the creationg and starting of the game take anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour, or the game stops responding.

Have you turned on PARTIAL_PRINT in /data/init/init.txt?

For what it's worth, I saw similar performance issues on my old PC for no apparent reason - CharlesPeter's description fits my old machine's behavior perfectly - I opted instead to take an extended break from the game to await the new release. If nothing else, I can confirm that I've seen it. I never found a fix for it. If you're interested, I'll dig up the specs for it, but it would take me a couple weeks to get it running again for actual testing (most of it's hardware has been salvaged for other machines)

So you were running with the default INIT settings I hope?

It might just be a terribly poorly coded graphics driver, which has caused a few issues in the past. (I think the 5000 ATI series cards were causing graphical problems with DF if old drivers were used).

The specs should work for now - while I doubt we'll be able to track down the offending components with just one set of specs, it should help if anyone else encounters this problem and comes to this bug looking for help.

Sorry I let this slip so long. My father cannibalized the PC for parts, so I can't be sure what was in it. It was an MX440 GeForce GPU though, I believe -- so ATI shouldn't be the issue, and the processor was a AMD, single core with a 1.8 ghz clock speed. I believe it was an Athlon.

Okay, since the PC is gone, I'm marking this "unable to reproduce." Feel free to reopen this report (or PM me on the forums) if the problem resurfaces in 31.05+.
