Summary0009445: Random save crashes
DescriptionI'm getting apparently random save crashes, and I can't find any common circumstance for it, other than perhaps human settlements, but that could be coincidence. Sometimes traveling away from the site prevents it, but I can't ever predict which site and site data could be causing its own problems. Saving from the travel map after moving from the tile doesn't reliably prevent crashes, either.
Steps To ReproduceReload after crash, do anything, go anywhere, save and expect a crash. The reproduceability is pretty consistent, but working around it isn't.
Additional InformationAttaching .7z with region/ and current/ folders.

Here's the save zip: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=D637512A31008C6D!17160&authkey=!ACTdVfIiKNB0I4c&ithint=file%2c7z

There is also 0009434 "Crash when walking around elven forest retreat" which may have the same cause.

You can store DF related file at http://dffd.bay12games.com/ . Zipped region folders (.zip) are the most recommended style for saves.

This has nothing to do with crashes during gameplay. It only occurs when SAVING.

I suspect corruptions may be caused by reloading from the main menu after saving, and subsequent saves prints the corruptions to disk.

@Detros
I reported 0009434 and I can confirm that these are most likely related.

@ArmokGoB Absolutely unrelated. Please read the above content before even coming to a conclusion, much less posting it.

I believe I've reproduced the crash issue. Passing time more than once in a given location, without offloading the site in between will cause the next save attempt to crash. 'Passing time' includes sleeping, resting, writing and composing. This is why I experience the crashes mostly in taverns but also in keeps, libraries, and once in a lair that I spent a day composing at.

Also, this only happens in sites. Getting woken by an ambush and going back to sleep in the wilds will not cause the next save to crash. If the same thing happens in a town, it will cause next save to fail.

Interesting finds. It may then be linked to 0006955, "Abandoned fortresses reconfigure when slept in / strange lighting" and 0009432, "Certain buildings' layout changes every time to visit them". I can see those changes of layout caused by passing of time then possibly causing nefarious things during saving process.

This isn't just a fresh new world, it's a fresh and pristine installation of df42.04. The problem has recurred anyway.

I've rarely crashed since I've gotten in the habit of backing up no fewer than the last three saves, only saving on the travel map, and never passing time twice in the same location without first leaving it.

DF 0.42.05 has "Fixed inconsistent underground vegetation generation (which caused underground site maps to generate inconsistently)". Can you check if this maybe got cleared with it?

I've had the same problem, though mine has occured while trying to save my adventurer by retiring him. I also interacted by sleeping and writing at one site. Though the problem didn't occur until I travlled to a new site.
