Summary | 0010221: Climbing to "open space" from "open space" is impossible. (game suggests holding "Air")
Description | Climbing up a cliff face is impossible. Climbing from an "open space" to an "open space" causes the player to fall in place, as if they had released hold. I know it happens on the save provided 100% of the time with any of the nearby walls. It's definitely a prevalent problem, because I've had it happen in specific places before, but it may or may not (I can't recall well enough to disprove) happen everywhere, always. I've also had it happen when climbing trees, and it may just be something to do with "open spaces". I'm not sure.
Steps To Reproduce | 1. Grab (h)old of something, preferably a rough-hewn wall (but it shouldn't matter what you hold, so long as you can reach a rough-hewn wall where the upcoming steps are possible). 2. Climb until you have the option to "move to open space holding X", where holding in X direction would mean holding a rough-hewn wall. Choose that option. 3. From the Open Space, holding a rough-hewn wall, climb to another open space. (It may still occur regardless of what you choose to climb to, I'm not sure) 4. Congratulations! You're now "in flight" and your movement speed is "flying". You will be prompted to grab hold of something, and if you want, you can!
Additional Information | Example save is here: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12880 Forget about my elaborate steps to reproduce (which try to outline the conditions which cause the failure to be observable), the fastest way to observe this in the save above is to go to the nearest wall, grab hold, and climb straight up. I found an old reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/2bptix/adventure_mode_climbing_difficulties/?st=j28ip4rk&sh=dcf87723) started by someone else who seemed to have the same issue. Based on both of our observations, this problem seems to be completely independent of the climbing skill. To anyone who thinks this *might* be intentional, it has prevented me from climbing up tree roots protruding from an eroded riverbank. If you've ever seen some IRL, you'd realize those are probably some of the easiest things to climb, ever. Very plausibly related to issue 8543.

What level of climbing skill? Any health issues? Did you try waiting for an hour? |

Thank you for the save. The problem appears to be that the game erroneously believes there is only "Air" to hold on to instead of the rough cavern wall in some tiles. Perhaps some of the tile properties are being set/interpreted incorrectly. Also, the game probably shouldn't be presenting a "hold" on "Air" as a valid move either. |
