Summary | 0010315: Dwarves constantly respond with 'troubles' breaking relationships
Description | Dwarves receive no social benefit to a repetitive behavior of reciting site troubles in fortress mode & adventure mode between themselves that fortress dwarves acknowledge but cannot respond with appropriate social gain or relationship progression. The only communication that dwarves are successfully capable of between themselves in adventure mode are greetings, and this is their primary function for eventually raising relationships with each other to "Friendly Terms" or remaining passing acquaintances. Constantly they will experience 'arguments' making them upset also which have no basis in personal value comparison and no conversation will take place from logging conversations for them to argue about.
Steps To Reproduce | In adventure mode: Visit a site, all of the occupants will constantly recite their troubles before you have even been introduced, to other citizens in the place of talking. In fortress mode: Alter the config RAW announcement.txt within (data -> init) to[REGULAR_CONVERSATION:A_D:D_D] to filter conversations into the fortress mode announcements and make a new world, observe the conversations dwarves have with each other upon establishing a new fortress in that world. None of the discourse will be contributive to forming friendships between citizens, including migrants. A meeting zone with no occupation sites and a lot of idling dwarves in a confined space is ideal staging area.
Additional Information | Summarizing my findings here where in this post & the following posts i have some transcripts within the spoilers of my own attempt to detail fortress mode conversations with my own analysis: ( http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=157394.msg7602102#msg7602102 ) Other entities that talk and aren't part of a current site or civilisation are unhindered, this includes wild animalmen & native HFS who can be heard through chat announcements discussing their personal values.

This forum post in regards to discovering the values of conversation for version 40.02 for the DF hack structures bears a similarity to the 'trouble' repeating behavior exhibited in their own words in regards to the final two paragraphs with activity_event_conversationst. ( http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=139553.msg5955877#msg5955877 ) A conversation with a 'trouble' event being mentioned goes like this. Etur Kegetherush, Weaponsmith: Hello Lokum. It's great to have a friend like you! Lokum Uzolinash, Planter: Hey. It is good to see you. It's great to have a friend like you! Traveling alone in the wilds?! You know better than that. Etur Kegetherush, Weaponsmith: A great beast threatens to bring ruin upon our people. Blossomhawks the Indignation of Dominating is in The Barb of Winds. Seek this place if you hunt St“rngut Wavequests the Sunny Lions the roc. This vile fiend has killed six in his lust for murder! Lokum Uzolinash, Planter: It is terrifying. Following the pattern closely detailed from the thread linked in this post, though i take into account its not entirely reliable the great similarity may be of interest to moderators handling this issue or Toady themselves to quickly reference. Important note is that Etur & Lokum are one of the starting 7 dwarves & already friends forced by the game upon embarkation. |

v0.43.05x32: I dug out a 3x3 room, zoned it a meeting area, and allowed 11 immigrants to idle there (dwarves were modded with [NO_EAT][NO_DRINK]). After several months of talking (including many 'trouble' discussions, and many non-'trouble' discussions) they have developed a dozen friendships (and one pair became lovers). While there may be problems forming friendships during a normal game (0008584), a propensity for discussing local threats does not appear to be the cause. |
|
I am surprised by your result, however i do stress that if this is a matter of efficiency of relationship forming being compromised then prioritizing redundant activities over relationship building activities could achieve your result with given intensive circumstances like you supplied. 3x3 needless dwarves isn't realistic at all for a average player vanilla player experience. Following the method brief of logging conversation chat in the original reports steps to reproduce, would be constructive to conclusively determining this report's complaint by marking out the social effect of people detailing troubles compared to other activities like comparing values between themselves. Reading conversation announcements ingame is not strictly required as all though it helps comprehending changes, conversations will also be sent to the game-log for later reference. |

v0.44.04: Toady "Stopped extraneous dwarf mode conversation text generation (freezes)", which appears to have entirely removed "trouble" discussions (among others) in dwarf mode. |
