Summary0010545: Dwarves sent on mission do not return
DescriptionI sent out a squad to retrieve an artifact. It's location was unknown and 'last known location' was an area that is marked as 'unreachable from your location'. This was in the second year. I've let the game run for 8 years and no sign of the original squad.

File: http://dffd.bay12games.com/download.php?id=13468&f=region3.zip

Even if they are still running from tavern to tavern it would be nice to know they're making progress and not just stuck against a cliff somewhere.

Did you check legends to see if they were captured?

Nope, the last entries of any dwarf were about joining the fort or adopting roosters etc.

I can confirm this, it happened to my squad as well. I sent them out to retrieve an artifact silver spear called "dyeweak" that was last seen in the "flayed prairie" in the year 439 (its was the year 798). The location itself is a two day's travel from my fort past an enemy human civ and an enemy orc civ. In 801 still no sign of the squad returning but what I noticed is that my population cap (set to strict 110) started to increase again from 100 (minus the 10 sent out) to now 103 after three births in my fort.

I retired a copy of the save to investigate and found a few interesting entries in legends mode:
- the artifact in question seems to be last wielded by the human Apuk Relicbore the Livid Danger", a werebeast, that "began wandering the flayed prairie in order to flee"
- The human apparently later died there
- the artifact itself "was lost in the the flayed prairie" in 439
- the dwarfs I sent out have no entry in the legends telling that they left or where they are but seem to be alive

Save: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13526
Sent a squad of dwarves to get an artifact located in "The Beloved Forest". It was "Last seen" at that location, turns out it is not a city or so, but literally just forest. The dwarves have never returned.

I assume this bug happens when the artifact in question is in not in a site (raid fort, raid town, etc). Last seen in the middle of a forest, they get stuck forever.

Save uses grimlocke's arms/armor mod so they're a bit different, but no major gameplay mods.

Similar issue. Sent out squad to a site (dragon lair) to retrieve an artifact (last known location) and they never returned after waiting several months.

Retiring the fort and and looking at legends showed that the dwarfs had searched the site and stolen the artifact 1-3 days after initially sending them out.

Reclaiming the fort "fixed the issue" in the sense the squad was back with the artifact (the artifact was in a stockpile). The mission, however, was still set and the squads after unpausing started moving out to the edge of the map to go on said raid.

Can confirm. It's been a year and it was supposed to take 2 days.

EDIT: Should have specified that this save is for 0.44.10

I've had this happen twice in a play through i've been testing and using the military for recovery raids etc... pretty extensively

the first time it happened i sent my dwarfs to recover an artifact last seen at one of my civilizations mountain homes they got their successfully stole it and "returned" except that the route shown in the report had them ending up in a human town. i don't think they got captured because my militia commander did come back. (i've also had squads where some members did get captured and it was reported as such.)

The second time this happened i was raiding a goblin tower I sent two squads they went everything went well they killed a few goblins and 7 trolls came back with loot. the message said "squad one and others have returned" Only the first squad returned and the militia captain of the second squad.

I should mention that i am on .44.09

Other than that having alot of fun with the raids. still annoying to loose a whole squad though for no reason.

I'm having that issue too, I'm at war with goblins that are 2 days travel from my fort. I raid them relentlessly, 2 to 3 times a year.
I've taken to save before sending them because they don't always come back.
They're not dead, I've had that and if you check the military screen you can see available spots in your squads.
They're not captured, I've had that and it showed in the mission screen (P : people)
They show in the military screen as (traveling) and months have passed while when it works correctly they come back in one to two weeks at most. I don't send them for anything specific, just pillaging (no random items or livestock)

This has been happening in 0.44.09 and 0.44.10

I'm not sure I'm right but I feel it's related to war/hunting assigned animals.
The last time they were stuck I noticed one of the animals was stuck in a not pet passable room.
I also noticed that the more animals they have assigned the more it fails.

Also once once of them was sleeping and almost two weeks had passed, I was about to kill the game and restart when suddenly he woke up and joined them , the moment he did they came back as if they had been waiting for him.
I wonder if there isn't a similar problem with pets ?

Another example of this bug. This was on a raid, with no animals involved. The only unusual circumstance was that I was sending the squads back out on missions as soon as the squad leader entered the map, rather than waiting for the whole squad to enter.

Edit: The mystery deepens. I loaded the same fort from a save three weeks earlier

This time a different squad is broken! Squad seven only has a few members, and the rest have vanished. Except that you can see in the announcements log that six others in squad seven already returned, and then were somehow forgotten. (Each soldier's nickname starts with his squad number, and each squad has ten dwarves.)

Hypothesis: If you send one of these broken squads out on a mission, it might come back whole. But you can only do that if the squad leader returned before the squad broke.

Altought this bug seems already a year old, it certainly still exists:

I have sent a squad of 8 dwarfs to an abandoned hillock with an artifacts last known location on a "Recover artifact" mission. It was a three days travel.
And know after 12 days I dont have any reports whatsoever of this mission..

"Exploring the site" mission seemed to work fine however"... I get no artifact though. According to legends: The artifact should still be there along with a mega-beast.

Hello there guys

I can "reproduce" the issue:
1. Set up squad
2. Put stray dog on chain
3. Assign this dog to soldier
4. Send squad with soldier away

Result: everyon goes away except of chained dog and everyone wait for it

same issue with the latest version, sent the boys out on a quick two day trip, they got to their destination, took what they were after, then decided to walk off south east (home was North East) and essentially disappeared, report just ends with them taking stuff.
Member 7 came home Alone...
