Summary0010991: Extremely severe lag (4ghz quad!) from sudden massive animal spawn on adventurer's site.
DescriptionI found site and built a room. It took few weeks. Then for 1 day I left site to purchase crossbow and returned to it. Then I picked all remains left outside and moved them over to near by spot in forest lying well in lands of neighboring Dwarven Village. Everything was fine until this point on my adventurer's site.

However then I went to define tavern location. Formed my own group. Claimed the tavern and recited some poetry on top. I went into building mode and built 1 single fortification piece on top of my building. This is the moment when the extremely sever lag hit my site.

I was like wow, what is happening? I went out and I saw river and lakes nearby defrosting. I was thinking: "the defrosted river on my site is causing all this lag? It never happened before.". I went to one of the lakes and improved in this lag my swimming from novice to adequate. I returned to my tavern and tried to cite some more poems, but lag just got more worse and even more worse. I was little angry about putting my tavern at this river spot, so for crying loud, I went out in this heavier and heavier lag out to see what is happening with this ยค#%! defrosted river...

I saw 100 animals directly at front of my tavern in circle of my view. None hostiles like trolls. All usual normal "friendly" forest critters, mammals, birds and so on, which I usually hunt in forest for meat and bones for crafting. Many species I didn't even see in this run of game like peregrine falcon. So I run among these animals and they all started to run away and fly up and away from me. However behind them in fog was even more of them. For a moment I was thinking lag was getting lighter. I returned to my tavern and saved. Should I upload it?

Was it my poems? Or were all these forest animals just thirsting for some beverage drink at my freshly found tavern?
Steps To Reproduce1. Find a site in adventurer's mode.
2. Build simple 11x11 room, put 1 bed in, put 1 carpenter shop in, cover stairs to roof with hatch and install door at single entrance.
3. Leave for 1 day to live in nearby dwarven hillock.
4. Return and move all remains to forest belonging to nearby dwarven hillock.
5. Define tavern zone. Define your own group. Claim the tavern zone.
6. Build 1 single fortification on top.
7. NOTICE LAG, which will only get worse and worse!
8. Wait some considerable time with ".". Recite poems even.
9. Go out and check all wild forest animals' crowding outside your tavern, probably thirsting for a drink or two... :D

I restarted from a lag-less save. I was dumping remains outside of my adventure camp. It didn't have tavern and I didn't become this site lord. However on each entrance into my site on my way to my building I noticed first time 6 buzzards. Killed 3. Went to dump their corpses. On way back again I see 10 ravens in the very same spot...

Though this time I didn't have extreme game breaking lag like after defining tavern zone, citing poetry and becoming its lord. I just got crowds after crowds of birds.

It has been suggested by Bralbaard on DF's forum that this bug may be related to:

Bralbaard has some technical issues, as he forgot his login as I understand, with getting back his old account on this bugtracker and it does not allow him to create a new account for some reason. Maybe someone could investigate his issues on bugtracker (send login to his email?) and help him out?

I killed a monster in its lair. After return to the lair, I noticed animal bug in this empty lair. Exactly same like on adventurer's site. Every time I enter, the area is filled with 10-20 wild animals from 2-3 different species. No amount of killing keeps it empty. Terrain above lair is rather small (19+1+24x20+1+29), so these animals really are crowding there on top of each other. Cleared monster lairs are infected with the same bug.

Here are 2 saves. 1st without lag. 2nd with a crippling lag. It is also repeatable. It took little time to produce those saves. Bug didn't appear right away.

To repeat bug from lag free version, just run to east until companions turn around and vanish in fog. Then turn around and run back to west. Huge crippling lag on adventure site loading, from 1400(50) to 3(2) fps. Toady one, you are adventure mode's only hope now. :)

Here is a save from Dark Fortress lag. Dark fortress lag is 3(2) fps. Walk short distance to east to experience it.

I was doing some business in Dark Fortress. It was already in heavy lag. I don't know if this lag is by game design or not. However after accomplishing successfully my short visit at dark fortress, I had to cut through around 500 Troll heads to get out from the dark fortress, which was the easy part, as well as through crushing 3(2) fps lag, which wasn't so easy. Please Toady one, you are only hope to adventure mode, which is being crashed on all sides by overwhelming lag!

I do not fast travel. I walk everywhere. I just check from time to time map of world in travel menu, but that's it. For a while animal spawns were not an issue. Only lairs and adventurer's camp were annoying mass animal spawns, which were also a major hit on fps. However lately (about 2+ months into the game), I find going anywhere outside hillocks or villages a cumbersome wading in animals of all kinds all along travel path.

Logically, if you go through some path forth and back, while killing as many wild animals as possible, then those paths should be more vacant of animals rather then host an increasing number of wild animal spawns in them.

Wild animal spawns and their increasing frequency and number is a general issue, rather then solemnly applied to lair and camp animal spawn bug.
