I was able to build a well with rope (no chain) in 0.31.02 but have not tried yet in 0.31.03.

I made a new fort and the issue didn't reappear. I was able to create a well with a rope.

Weird. I'll leave this open in case someone else manages to reproduce it.

Ok I have had a similar problem now with a new game. I tried again to build a well but DF would not let me stating I had no mechanisms. However there are two quite clearly sitting in my stockpile.

Are the stockpile or the well in a burrow?

I have no burrows defined

Does the problem persist through a save/load?

No, a save and reload cleared the mechanism confusion.

Odd. Had you breached the adamantine and/or magma ocean when this bug showed up?

No where near. I had hit the first cavern, and had dug a shaft to pull water from it via a well.

Reminder sent to: EvilGrin

Have you been able to reproduce this in versions beyond the one you reported it in? There have been some fixes to pathfinding that may have rendered this bug obsolete.

Sorry for not getting back to this. I've not seen this re-appear in newer versions of DF I've played.

May have been a pathing issue, but even the OP was unable to reproduce it.
