Summary | 0011142: Pathing issues while building stairways
Description | Not quite sure how to reproduce; I was building stairways down into the caverns when I noticed that I started getting a lot of hauling cancel messages, "cannot find path." Shortly after this, when attempting to add to the stairways, I was noticing that the distances to materials were all *negative*. I stopped playing at this point because after that, I didn't know what else might break, or if there was a workaround to fix this problem.

The negative distances is some kind of bug that's probably mainly cosmetic when it comes to the negative values (the materials should not be available at all). It may even be that saving and loading the game clears the negative values, but I'm not sure about that. The cause is typically that you've somehow managed to break the path between the materials and the construction site so nothing is available. You need to locate the break in the path connection and fix it (it may be a disconnected stairway with one section missing, for instance, or the channeling away of a tile of the path. It's also possible that the growth of a tree has blocked the path, in which case you either have to create a new path or chop the tree down (and there's another issue with trees blocking paths in that DF may not recognize that the path is clear when the tree has been removed. Saving and reloading has caused the path to be recalculated correctly for me in the past). |

Did your stairway hit any trees, and were they removed (either by tree cutting or by building on them)? If so, this is probably 0010208. |
