I'm cross-threading this here to keep this information on the open thread.

I don't know about an expedition leader getting reappointed.

I do know that when the expedition leader dies, ALL appointed nobles go poof.

expedition leader
- military commander
- sheriff
- manager
- chief medical dwarf
- broker
- bookkeeper

all go poof because expedition leader dies. nobles screen is BLANK!

I think it deletes unappointed positions and those that the expedition leader also assumes.

I still have two positions left on my screen, that I appointed to other dwarfs. However, the replace button is greyed out and not functional anymore.

They have not reappeared yet.

Save and reload fixed it a little bit for me. I thought it was a feature, because my militia captains who died in battle were still on the list. I just removed em, but their old squads are vacant still and won't go away :)

Verified. The only noble I have left is the broker because that one was assigned to a different dwarf.

Same here; leader tantrumed (and picked on a woodcutter with a nice shiny bronze axe; he promptly ended up in three pieces on the floor), died, now I have no way of appointing nobles.

Does a replacement leader get chosen eventually, or am I entirely doomed?

EDIT: Answering my own question: there doesn't appear to be any replacement. I've waited three seasons. Since I have no doctor, militia commander, broker, etc I'm fairly limited as to what I can do.

After losing a fort and reclaiming I had no nobles. But, once I started a new fort in a newly generated region that fort had no nobles either. I hadn't restarted DF, so I tried saving the new fort and restarting DF then reloading. But that still gave me no nobles.

Creating a new region after a restart did give me a fort with nobles, I've not tested creating a new fort in one of the old regions after a restart and the saves are deleted now so I can't.

I've had this problem occur, I also had no arsenal dwarf available at any time during the fort despite 80+ population.

The noble screen eventually returned despite nothing related to nobles (as best as i can tell) occurring at the time.

Starting a new fort in the same region after restarting DF wasn't a problem here.

I don't think the save file will be needed -- this one sounds pretty consistent. Won't hurt to keep it around though.

There seems to be a variation in the affected positions. I had a mayor/broker drop dead, and lost control of her positions along with the slot for caption of the guard, which was vacant at the time. All other positions (manager, bookkeeper, arsenal, militia commander and chief medical dwarf) remained as they were, with the appointed dwarves still in place. The vacant slot for militia captain remained as well.

I wonder if the affected positions have something to do with the "appointed by" column seen in the table on the wiki: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Noble

I reached 50+ dwarves not long before this happened and all remaining positions were filled before that – so, maybe they were unaffected because the Expedition Leader had been upgraded to Mayor? Maybe there's a connection that gets lost as the title changes.

DoctorZuber

the reason I said to hold the save file is he's saying his nobles were missing at embark, which is slightly different.

confirmed.

My mayor died after going insane (no shells - because of the no fish bug dammit) - after that the noble screen doesn't show the mayor position anymore (even though a new mayor is obviously appointed, as I see him running around).
Its also not possible anymore to replace the other noble positions.

I have also had this issue... I had the Expedition Leader set to most of the positions but a separate Chief Medical Dwarf and Militia Commander. All three dwarves died and now the only position listed is Militia Commander, listing the last dwarf to hold the position, even though he's dead.

Also I noted that while you cannot assign a new Bookkeeper, the stocks are all appear to be up to date at the last level of precision which the bookkeeper obtained before death

workaround for squad commanders...

- (m) (l) Create a new squad
- put someone in position 1
- exit the screen
- (n) look at the nobles screen and wave at your commander

Still somewhat worthless if you're over population 20 and lose your arsenal captain though. But beats nothing.

A variation on the same bug; I had two mayors (bug 312),and the ex-mayor died.
I still have all the positions in the nobles screen, but don't get the option to replace any of them anymore, except the 3 vacant militia captain posts I had.

2010-04-13 10:14

reporter   ~0003282

This is not a bug! You can't assign dwarves for positions while you have no mayor or expedition leader. When another is elected, the position return to the noble screen. I can confirm this - my mayor died in an ambush, and then the position remained, as all of them were occupied. then my chief medical dwarf died too, and the position was gone. Then I got another dwarf elected mayor, and I could assign a new chief medical dwarf.

Not a bug, close this.

SirPenguin

2010-04-13 12:12

reporter   ~0003309

I disagree, it's still a bug. The fact that the positions disappear might not be a bug, but there is no way to get a new expedition leader. You need at least 50 dwarves to get that mayor.

If your expedition leader dies early on it becomes almost impossible to ever recover without nobles. Past 20 dwarves you *cannot* equip your military without an arsenal dwarf, meaning your military will be entirely useless. No broker, no bookkeeper, no manager. Trade liaisons IMMEDIATELY leave because they have no one to meet with.

It's obviously possible to simple wait a couple of years and hope that you get 50 migrants, but you'd be completely stunted before then

That CANNOT be intended. A quick and intelligent fix is to simply make the expedition leader electable so that upon his death a new one can take his place.

I had the same happen to me after my baroness (who was also the mayor and broker) died during a siege. Oddly enough a new mayor was appointed but doesn't show up on the noble screen. Mostly what I need right now is a new broker so I can trade.

user891

Once it's possible to get a mayor, the dwarves will keep electing mayors even if your population drops below 50. (A tantrum spiral reduced my population to 20, then they elected a new mayor)

On the plus side I can still trade with caravans, as long as I have it set to anyone may trade, however I cannot request things from the diplomats (the leave unhappy as soon as they enter) or see the value of things. :(

It also appears that when this happened that a dwarf was randomly selected to become Captian of the Guard, I didnt really notice this until I had a dwarf get the poo beaten outa him for failing to fill a mandate.

Also as stated above I cannot replace any of my nobles, at least not those that were nobles before these deaths.

TEMPORARY WORKAROUND for this bug:

I have confirmed that if the mayor dies and a new one is re-elected all the positions reappear. I have not been able to confirm that this will happen for expedition leaders. If you change the line in the entity_default.txt raw file under mayor from [REQUIRES_POPULATION:50] to [REQUIRES_POPULATION:1] you should be guaranteed to have a mayor at all times and therefore only suffer a season or so downtime until the positions become available again.

I haven't tested this yet so if anyone does this and the raw change doesn't work as expected please post a seperate bug report about the raws not working. If expeditions leaders do in fact also get re-elected then make a note of that here.

After my mayor/baroness died a new mayor was elected (who was by chance my Chief Medi dwarf. But the position of Mayor and a few others never returned on the screen. :(
Had my dwarves survived the hammer gob ambush I may have done some expermenting to see if I could get all these missing positions back.

Still exists. I had a dragon break into my fort, my chief medical dwarf died, and now the noble position is gone, as well as the Health tab on status screen. Which sucks, cause most of my guys are injured and need first aid in some way.

teethering

2010-04-21 12:15

reporter   ~0004487

I also had a dragon incident which killed my mayor/broker. It also apparently destroyed my trade depot, which I didn't notice at first and kept waiting for my new mayor to get elected so I can appoint the broker. When I finally noticed it and rebuilt it the mayor got elected and the broker position got opened up.

I don't know if that's just a coincidence, but in either case somehow the game recovered from losing nobles.

My mayor just went berkerk and I hat to put him down. I've noticed:
- he doesn't get buried
- he's not listed along with other deceased in the unit list

I dont know if this isn't issue with berserks, but I suppose it most likely fits here. Also, I didn't open a new report, because it feels like a symptom of this problem.

EDIT: Correction, he did get buried after a while, yet he's still not listed amongst the deceased.

^^^ No it doesn't. Enemies and wild animals, living or deceased, show up in the unit screen.

Jiri: there was a report (0001156) that a dwarf who died while berserk WAS listed, but grouped in with the wild animals rather than with dwarves. You might want to crosspost your info on that report.

*** Temporary Fix ***

- Edit the file 'entity_default.txt' in the 'raw\objects\' directory
- Find '[POSITION:EXPEDITION_LEADER]'
- Go down five lines to '[RULES_FROM_LOCATION]'
- Add a line after this that says '[ELECTED]'.

If your expedition leader dies, your dwarves should elect a new leader at the next season change.

Unfortunately this needs you to gen a new world, so you can't use it to fix an existing fort.

Reaching a population of 50 after the bug occurs did not fix the problem for me.
Expedition Leader /Broker drowned while running away from a trog - took me 2 years to get pop to 50, but no mayor was elected, no nobles showed up.

It seems that deaths 'toggle' the bug: Accidently dug into hell on year three, when dwarves started dying (no militia commander/captain, just random dwarves) all the positions reappeared in the 'n' screen, vacant of course.
About 20 deaths later, the positions vanished again. Didn't check the effect of following deaths though.

Using the raw editing posted by Dave Mongoose should save a existing fort if you edit \data\save\region x\raw\objects\entity_default.txt and then reload that save

might require [COMPRESSED_SAVES:NO] in init.txt
