Summary0001585: Can't create obsidian on magma flow tiles
DescriptionI'll start by saying I'm not sure this is actually a bug. It could be entirely intended as a 'bugger off' from doing some of the more insane actions possible.

In order to retrieve every bit of special metal I can, I've been flooding the surrounding magma with water, creating obsidian walls. Rinse and repeat as I go down. This allows me to mine out the special metal for use, which was previously the barrier to the magma until the water flood.

This worked beautifully (if a bit insanely and tedious at times) until I got to the final layer at Magma.. Which oddly refuses to turn into obsidian. I could pour water into it all day if I wanted, and it would just keep burning it up.

Again.. This may be intentional.. It may not be.. It does seem that I'm going to miss out on some of that beautiful special metal, however. Shame shame.

I presume this has something to do with the magma layer involved here simply getting instantly refilled. Oddly, I think I was able to make -one- tile become obsidian.
Steps To ReproduceKind of a pain.. Set up a system where you cover magma in water to create obsidian, dig into it, channel down, let in more water, dig in, channel down, etc. - until you find the final layer of magma. Then try and pour water into it.

You wouldn't happen to be trying to get rid of the semi-molten rock, would you?

Na. But it is entitled 'Magma Flow', which may have something to do with it. All the other layers are entitled 'Open Space' - they just contain 7/7 magma.

The odd thing is is that -one- square did become obsidian. But I'm dumping 3squares worth of water onto the thing -constantly, and it's just fizzling it away.

"Magma Flow" shows up when one channels out normal rock that's directly above semi-molten rock. I'm told that it can spawn magma, but it seemed to otherwise act like a floor. Possibly related?

Well, in this case, 'magma flow' is just the name of the entire base layer of magma. It's not just the areas I've channeled out - it's the entire lower layer of magma. Go to your DF game, on a map where you've uncovered magma, go to the very bottom of it, press k, and look around.

Where the above layers are entitled 'Open Space', this layer is entitled 'magma flow'.

What I'm not sure about is if it's a bug that magma on the 'flow' layer cannot be turned into obsidian.

And I was wrong - apparently the obsidian tile was natural, and only perfectly placed to look like I caused it.

I did some searching and found some threads about past magma-flow behaviour.
Apparently it acts as floor grate of sorts, provided it's free of magma, http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=38331.msg636954#msg636954, http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=36295.msg575488#msg575488, http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1373-magmaflowisawalkablefloor,

Yeah. I just wasn't aware if the player was allowed to 'obsidian' it.

From my experience the bottom layer of magma (the "magma flow" tiles) tend to destroy/remove/vanish dropped natural stone (eg, created obsidian or dropped upper layers). I don't think there's a way around this.

According to http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=36295.msg574206#msg574206, dropping water onto a magma flow tile is supposed to obsidianize it.

This may have changed in this version, though.

Hence why I stated at the beginning that I'm not sure if it's a bug or not. It could be intentional, so players don't accidentally (IE - through extremely hard work that would have to be intentional) cut off their own magma supply..

Then again, I guess you could just channel it out if you needed it back. Who knows.

Either way. Either a bug or just part of things.

Magma flow tiles seem to behave the same as they did back in 40d - to units they act as floors, but to items (and cave-ins) they act as chasms.

Well that would make sense, except where the obsidian should form is right next to existing walls - so even if they did behave like chasms, the formed obsidian shouldn't just 'fall in'. It has a surface to attach to.

While you're right, Dekon, it does have a surface to attach to but the tile it's occupying has the behavior "delete things that are inside me" just like chasms in DF40.

Note that while you cannot create obsidian on magma flow tiles, the water will instead annihilate the magma present. Do this fast enough to keep an area clear and you can build constructions on it. Once it is a construction rather than a magma flow, then you can presumably obsidianize it if it allows magma from surrounding tiles to flow over it.
