Summary | 0001857: Ranged weapon users gain their weapon's melee skill after their armor deflects projectiles
Description | Not sure if this is a bug or a feature.
Steps To Reproduce | 1) in arena, make a dwarf some dwarves decked out in crazy good layers of armor, and give them crossbows and ammo, but don't give them any skill in bow use. 2) let them shoot at each other until they run out of ammo (9/10 the won't be able to hurt each other through the armor). 3)look at their skill levels.
Additional Information | I kinda liked the way it was in 40d, if you wanted your xbowdwarfs to be worth a damn in melee, you had to spend a little extra effort to teach them to be mace dwarves as well. Now they just learn both skills at the same rate.

It looks like the melee skill is being trained each time an attack is deflected by one's armor, not when actually attacking - maybe it's getting confused and thinking that it parried the shot (which did give melee weapon experience in previous versions). |
|
This is easily observed with a danger room as well. Marksdwarves will quickly become Hammerdwarves after they block or deflect the wooden training spears for a few in-game days or weeks. |
|
I read in the forums that dwarves can deflect attacks not only with their shields but also with their weapons, which uses the weapon (melee) skill and probably also trains it up. Could this be what's happening here? |
|
Yeah, I suspect they were getting experience for a bat/parry attempt, which seems reasonable. |
