Summary | 0001977: Injured internal organs are dressed by medic
Description | One of my jewelers had a pet die in combat and observed it rot in the graveyard, this made him pretty morose and eventually it was all too much and he threw a tantrum, took pleasure in destroying a door, started a fistfight with a fishcleaner and a tanner, eventually he got beaten to a pulp by the sheriff. Now contently lying in the hospital with almost every bodypart pierced by the Sheriff's pick I can observe that his kidneys and liver are slated for dressing. This may be a feature, the diagnostic in question mistreating the patient though inexperience, yet... ...dressing internal organs is a really bad idea, even sterile cloth inside a wound introduces an extreme risk of sepsis setting in. Unless the dressing is often refreshed and opening up his abdominal cavity frequently for this activity would be more than likely to kill the patient. ;) I'd say: if the organ is severely cut apart, removing the damaged tissue by surgery and a minimal amount of sutures are the best course of action.
Steps To Reproduce | 1- Get a dwarf into the hospital with several internal bits damaged. 2- Let McHouse diagnose the victim. 3- View treatment plans for internals.

not the treatment plan is the bug. the dwarf still alive is, but im pretty sure this problem is known. |
|
Confirming. My dwarf has a pierced lung, it was treating by sutures and bandages. Sound like a "surgery" would be a better choice. |

(I wish there was a spoiler option here...) My demented dorf: left foot, skin: cut open left foot, fat: cut open -- right lower arm, skin/fat: co -- lower body, skin/fat/muscle: co right kidney, tissue: torn open (cyan in wounds view) -- upper body, skin/fat/muscle: co liver, tissue: torn open -- left lower arm, skin/fat/muscle: co -- upper body, fat: co -- lower body, fat: co -- right lower leg, skin/fat: CO -- lower body, fat: CO -- lower body, fat: CO -- upper body, fat: CO -- lower body, fat/muscle: CO guts, gut : ? (cyan in wounds) -- lower body, fat/muscle: CO guts, gut : ? (cyan in wounds) -- right upper arm, skin/fat/muscle :CO -- upper body, fat/muscle : CO liver, liver tissue : has been sutured (cyan in wounds view) ----- So the liver was torn, has been sutured already and now only needs dressing, the kidney was also torn and apparently only needs dressing, the gut is also dysfunctional, but requires no further treatment. In the thoughts screen, kidney and liver show as fractured (odd?!) and the gut as dented, it seems the gut healed before diagnosis. Must have been just a bruise because it also says she is very slow to heal. She lost grasping ability, some sensing nerves and motor skills. ----- The treatment plan is fine, but it does not entirely properly take into account layers it seems. Internal organs need to be dressed only if they remain exposed after the covering layers are taken care of. -------------------------- EDIT: Turns out the sheriff wasn't finished with her yet: a month or so later he appears at her bedside and plants his pick in her skull. tearing the muscle, shattering the skull and tearing apart the brain, right through that nice silk cap... also tearing a tendon (I wonder which? meck?). she is no more. >< here I thought the sheriff was purposely avoiding the head for a 'non-lethal' punishment. lol |

I honestly think this might just be intended. What if a wound is so severe an organ is exposed and sutures wont fix it? I guess trying to place gauze on it and taping over the wound would work too. |
|
@toybasher: At least enough for a Dwarven medic to try it, medicine isn't really their strong suit. But I'd still think they'd understand enough to not shove gauze inside an organ that has pick wounds through the skin. |
|
One of my dorfs received sutures on the skull. Now that's an accomplishment on behalf of the doctor. Wonder if he had an adamantine sewing needle... |
|
One of my soldiers managed to "Fracture" a lung and a kidney. Both of these organs require dressings and the kidney has been wrapped in a cloth. http://s1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa441/Fallen_Flame/?action=view¤t=KidneyDressing.jpg |
